Wingman Metrics
Walking into Rose Tavern, the wine list signals that someone here actually cares β a sommelier is on staff, and it shows in the curation. Twenty by-the-glass options on a 27-label list is an unusual ratio, almost aggressive in its openness, and that's a good sign. The Finger Lakes presence is front and center, which is exactly right given the address.
The list is compact but deliberate: local heroes like Hermann J. Wiemer's Magdalena Vineyard Cab Franc and Ravines Dry Riesling anchor the Finger Lakes section with genuine credibility, not just regional tokenism. From there it reaches into Provence for Whispering Angel, Sonoma for Flowers Chardonnay, and pulls a left-field move with Le Rocher des Violettes Chenin Blanc from the Loire β a wine you don't see on many hotel restaurant lists anywhere. The gaps are real: no Italian, no Spanish, and Burgundy is absent. But what's here has a clear point of view, and that counts for a lot at 27 bottles.
Twenty pours from 27 bottles means almost everything on the list is available by the glass, which is genuinely generous β you can explore the whole list without committing to a bottle. Prices run $14 to $35 a glass, with the top tier reserved for things like The Prisoner and Flowers Chardonnay. The Dr. Konstantin Frank Celebre Riesling as an entry point is a smart, locally rooted choice that earns its spot.
Ravines Wine Cellars Dry Riesling β $14β$16/glass (est.)
Ravines makes some of the most serious Finger Lakes Riesling going, and drinking it while looking at Canandaigua Lake is one of the more honest wine experiences you can have in upstate New York. It's priced at the lower end of the glass range and punches well above its weight.
Le Rocher des Violettes Chenin Blanc
A Loire Valley Chenin Blanc on a hotel tavern list in western New York is genuinely unexpected. Most guests will scroll past it looking for something familiar, which means more for the people who know what they're looking at β a taut, mineral-driven wine that has no business being this accessible here.
The Prisoner Red Blend
At $35 a glass and $140 a bottle, The Prisoner is doing a lot of marketing work for a wine you can find at any Total Wine for around $30 retail. That's a near 5x markup on a grocery-store staple. There are far more interesting bottles on this list for less money.
Hermann J. Wiemer 'Magdalena Vineyard' Cabernet Franc + Wood-fired grilled meats
Wiemer's Magdalena Cab Franc has that cool-climate edge β bright red fruit, green herb, firm structure β that cuts through char and fat without fighting the meat. It's local, it's serious, and it's exactly the kind of bottle that makes a grilled dinner feel like a real occasion.
π² The Bottom Line
Rose Tavern isn't trying to be a destination wine bar, but it's got the bones of one β a sommelier, a thoughtful local-first list, and a glass program that lets you actually explore it. Markups on the name brands are punishing, but stick to the Finger Lakes section and you're drinking well at a lake view that most wine lists couldn't dream of.

Nolan's is a dependable lakeside wine list that does right by its guests without taking any real risks β the Finger Lakes locals are a genuine highlight worth seeking out. Send a friend here for the view and the steak; tell them to order the Heron Hill.

Downtown Canandaigua Β· Canandaigua Β· Spanish tapas and wine bar
Pintxo is punching well above its weight class for a small-city wine bar, and the Spanish regional focus gives it a genuine identity that most places never find. If you're anywhere near the Finger Lakes and care even a little about wine, this one's worth the detour.

Rose Tavern is a perfectly pleasant place to drink wine if you're already staying at The Lake House β the setting does a lot of the work. But if you're driving in specifically for the wine list, you'd do better hitting a dedicated Finger Lakes tasting room down the road.

The Lake House is a beautiful place to get married or host a corporate dinner, but the wine program is clearly an afterthought β a functional, inoffensive list designed to move bottles at events, not to excite anyone. If you're eating here, drink the Finger Lakes options and leave the Meomi alone.

Flavors isn't a wine destination, but it's not pretending to be one either β the list is honest, the prices are fair, and the Fox Run Riesling alone justifies ordering a bottle. Come for the food, drink the Riesling, and don't overthink it.

This is not a wine destination β it's a place to sleep near the highway that happens to have wine on the menu because it's legally a full-service hotel. Order a beer, or head somewhere else entirely.
