You're sitting on the edge of Canandaigua Lake, the view is genuinely gorgeous, and then the wine list arrives — and it's about as adventurous as a khaki blazer. The bones are fine, the execution is resort-safe, and if you're hoping to find a deep Finger Lakes rabbit hole to fall down, you'll need to look harder than you'd expect this close to wine country.
The list runs 40-60 bottles and leans heavily California — Caymus, Stag's Leap, and Joel Gott 815 Cab are doing most of the heavy lifting on the red side, which is perfectly competent but uninspired for a property sitting in one of America's most exciting wine regions. There's some Finger Lakes riesling in the mix, which is the right call given the address, but it doesn't appear to go deep or rotate with any ambition. Red blends like 8 Years in the Desert and Machete show up, which signals the list is playing to crowd instincts rather than place. The gaps — no serious Finger Lakes producers, no Old World depth to speak of — are real.
Ten to sixteen pours by the glass is a solid count for a resort tavern, and the price floor of $6-$12 is approachable. The problem is the by-the-glass program mirrors the bottle list's comfort-zone tendencies — expect the Joel Gott and 14 Hands crowd-pleasers to dominate, not much rotation or seasonal energy.
8 Years in the Desert Red Blend — $12/glass
Bonny Doon's eccentric, Rhône-inspired red blend consistently punches above its price point — if it's at the top of the glass price range here, it's still the most interesting thing on the pour list and worth every dollar compared to the generic alternatives.
Finger Lakes Riesling (house selection)
Whatever Finger Lakes riesling they're pouring deserves your attention simply because of context — you're drinking it fifty yards from the lake that shaped it. Most guests default to California reds and miss the wine that actually belongs on this menu.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus is fine wine, but at resort markup it's going to cost you significantly more than retail, and you're paying for a brand name that every other steakhouse in the country also carries. There's no reason to burn your budget here.
Stag's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon + Local beef main
Stag's Leap Cab is structured enough to hold up against a farm-sourced beef entrée without overwhelming it — the Napa fruit weight and tannin frame the meat without turning the whole thing into a showdown. It's a classic move, and at a resort like this, sometimes the classic move is the right one.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Rose Tavern is a perfectly pleasant place to drink wine if you're already staying at The Lake House — the setting does a lot of the work. But if you're driving in specifically for the wine list, you'd do better hitting a dedicated Finger Lakes tasting room down the road.

Pintxo is punching well above its weight class for a small-city wine bar, and the Spanish regional focus gives it a genuine identity that most places never find. If you're anywhere near the Finger Lakes and care even a little about wine, this one's worth the detour.

The Lake House is a beautiful place to get married or host a corporate dinner, but the wine program is clearly an afterthought — a functional, inoffensive list designed to move bottles at events, not to excite anyone. If you're eating here, drink the Finger Lakes options and leave the Meomi alone.

Rose Tavern isn't trying to be a destination wine bar, but it's got the bones of one — a sommelier, a thoughtful local-first list, and a glass program that lets you actually explore it. Markups on the name brands are punishing, but stick to the Finger Lakes section and you're drinking well at a lake view that most wine lists couldn't dream of.
