The wine list at The Local feels exactly like the restaurant itself — unpretentious, rooted in Virginia, and more considered than it first appears. It's not trying to impress you with Burgundy grand crus or a 200-bottle cellar, and that's actually the point. This list has an identity, and in Charlottesville that identity starts and ends with what's growing in the ground around you.
The focus on Virginia producers is the defining move here, and it works because Charlottesville is surrounded by serious wine country. Barboursville Vineyards and King Family Vineyards both show up, which are two of the state's most consistent names — not tourist-trap labels, actual producers worth drinking. The list runs somewhere in the 40-to-80-bottle range, which is the right size for a neighborhood spot that rotates its food menu seasonally. We'd love to see a bit more depth in the by-the-glass program to match the ambition of the bottle list, and a few more producers from outside Central Virginia would round things out — but the bones are good.
You're looking at roughly 8 to 14 pours by the glass, which gives you real options without overwhelming anyone. The price ceiling sits around $16, which is honest for Charlottesville. We'd recommend asking what's new — the staff may not always volunteer that information, but there's usually something worth trying if you push a little.
King Family Vineyards (bottle, Monday) — ~half of list price on Mondays
King Family makes some of the most food-friendly wine in Virginia — their Meritage-style reds and Viognier-forward whites consistently over-deliver. On Monday nights when bottles up to $75 are half price, you're drinking well for the price of a single cocktail at most places in town. This is the move.
Barboursville Vineyards
Most people see 'Virginia wine' and mentally check out, but Barboursville has been making serious wine since the 1970s and their Italian-variety program — Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Vermentino — is the kind of thing that surprises even skeptics. Order it before someone else at the table talks you out of it.
Any generic non-Virginia bottle on the list
The whole point of drinking here is the Virginia focus. If you're reaching for a commodity California Cab or a bulk-production Pinot Grigio with no story behind it, you've missed the plot entirely and probably paid a standard 3x markup for the privilege. Stick to what makes this list worth opening.
King Family Vineyards + Shrimp and Grits
A King Family Viognier or white Meritage blend against the shrimp and grits is a genuinely good regional food-and-wine moment — the wine's stone fruit and subtle richness plays well against the savory, creamy base of the dish without either element drowning the other out.
Monday — Half price on all bottles up to $75 on Monday nights. This is a legitimate deal — not a buried asterisk situation. Plan accordingly.
🎲 The Bottom Line
The Local isn't trying to be a wine destination, but it's doing something smarter — building a list that actually reflects where it lives. Show up on a Monday, order Virginia, and you'll leave having drunk better than you expected for less than you planned to spend.

Prime 109 is one of the best wine programs in Virginia, full stop — deep list, a sommelier who clearly curated it with intention, and picks that reward curiosity over brand recognition. The markup stings, but in a room this good, with bottles this interesting, you're probably going to forgive it.

Oakhart Social's wine list punches well above its weight class for a small plates spot — the range is genuinely exciting and the Virginia representation is the real deal. Markups on the high end will sting if you reach for the Ramey or the top Rhones, but stick to the midrange and the by-the-glass picks and you're drinking well in one of Charlottesville's more interesting rooms.
