Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Prime 109 hits differently than most steakhouses β it's not just Napa Cab on repeat. You open it and immediately clock that someone with actual taste built this thing, from the Piedmont section to a genuinely surprising Virginia presence that doesn't feel like a token gesture.
Two hundred to four hundred bottles is a serious commitment, and Prime 109 earns the range. The list leans into Napa Valley and Bordeaux where you'd expect β this is a steakhouse, after all β but the Piedmont selections and a thoughtful Burgundy chapter give it real depth. The Virginia wines aren't just window dressing; they're integrated into the list like they belong there. What separates this from a lazy big-format list is the range within categories: you're not just choosing between Caymus and Opus One.
Fifteen to twenty-five by-the-glass options is an unusually generous pour program for a room of this caliber. The selection skews toward what the kitchen demands β bigger reds, structured whites β but there's enough range to find something interesting without committing to a bottle. No apparent rotation or featured pours program, which is a missed opportunity at this level.
2017 Vietti Arneis β null
Arneis is chronically underpriced relative to how well it performs at a dinner table β bright, textured, and refreshing. Vietti is one of Piedmont's benchmark producers, so getting their Arneis on a steakhouse list is a minor miracle. Order it before your steak arrives and thank us later.
2012 Paolo Bea San Valentino
Most tables in a place like this will go straight to the Cab page. That's their loss. Paolo Bea is a cult Umbrian producer making wines with almost no commercial footprint in the US β their San Valentino is a Sangiovese-based blend with the kind of earthy complexity that makes you forget there's a ribeye on the way. A 2012 with this kind of age on it is a serious find.
Generic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon
The Napa Cab section is the list's weakest value proposition. You're paying a premium for names that every steakhouse in America stocks, marked up accordingly. The same money spent elsewhere on this list β Burgundy, Piedmont, even Virginia β buys you something you can't get everywhere else.
2012 Paolo Bea San Valentino + Bone-in Ribeye
The San Valentino's iron-and-earth character cuts through the ribeye's fat without the tannin hammer of a young Napa Cab. It's the kind of pairing that makes the steak taste better and the wine taste better simultaneously β which is the whole point.
π₯ The Bottom Line
Prime 109 is one of the best wine programs in Virginia, full stop β deep list, a sommelier who clearly curated it with intention, and picks that reward curiosity over brand recognition. The markup stings, but in a room this good, with bottles this interesting, you're probably going to forgive it.
Boar's Head / Ivy Road Β· Charlottesville Β· Casual American
The Bistro at Boar's Head isn't a wine destination, but it doesn't embarrass itself either β especially for a resort list, the Virginia producer support is genuine and worth ordering. If you're on property, lean local and you'll leave satisfied.

The Mill Room earns its place as a reliable destination for Virginia wine in Charlottesville β the local section is the real draw, and if you lean into it, you'll drink well. Just go in knowing the markups reflect the resort address, and order accordingly.

Maya isn't a destination wine list, but it's a thoughtful one β Virginia-forward, fairly priced, and with a Wednesday half-price program that makes it one of the better mid-week wine deals in Charlottesville. Show up on a Wednesday, order the Horton Cab Franc, and tell your friends.

Oakhart Social's wine list punches well above its weight class for a small plates spot β the range is genuinely exciting and the Virginia representation is the real deal. Markups on the high end will sting if you reach for the Ramey or the top Rhones, but stick to the midrange and the by-the-glass picks and you're drinking well in one of Charlottesville's more interesting rooms.

Aberdeen Barn is a reliable, if pricey, wine destination for Napa loyalists β show up on a Wednesday between 3 and 6 p.m. and the half-price bottle deal changes the entire math. Outside of Wine Wednesday, the markups are hard to love.

1700 Degrees is a competent hotel steakhouse wine list β safe, somewhat steep, and unlikely to thrill anyone who cares deeply about what's in their glass. But if you're here for the beef and want something that won't embarrass the meal, it gets the job done.
