Walking into a resort bistro, you brace for the worst — a laminated card with two Chardonnays and a Malbec nobody asked for. The Bistro at Boar's Head clears that low bar and then some, leaning into its Virginia backyard with local producers anchoring the list. It's not a destination for wine nerds, but it's a solid play if you're already staying on property or catching a meal near the university.
The list runs 50-100 bottles across Virginia, California, and Italy — a sensible trio that covers the table without trying too hard. The Virginia representation is the real draw here: King Family Vineyards and Barboursville show up, and both are legitimate picks from two of the state's most consistent producers. California fills the middle ground for guests who aren't feeling adventurous, and the Italian presence suggests someone put at least a little thought into this beyond the usual resort copy-paste. Gaps exist — there's no serious depth in Burgundy, Rhône, or anything that would excite a more curious drinker — but for a hotel bistro, the bones are decent.
Eight to fourteen pours by the glass is a reasonable spread for this format, and having the Barboursville Viognier and King Family Rosé available by the glass keeps the local angle intact without forcing a full bottle commitment. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority — the list reads more like a standing menu than something that changes with the seasons. If you want a glass of something local and interesting, you can find it here; just don't expect surprises.
King Family Vineyards Rosé — null
King Family makes one of Virginia's most consistent rosés, and drinking it on-property in the shadow of the Blue Ridge is exactly the right context. If the price holds anywhere near retail, this is the move — it's a wine that earns its pour in a way that a lot of resort list staples simply don't.
Barboursville Vineyards Viognier
Most guests at a resort bistro are reaching for Chardonnay by reflex, which means the Barboursville Viognier sits there waiting for someone to notice it. Barboursville's been growing Viognier in Virginia longer than almost anyone, and theirs consistently punches above its weight — floral, textured, and genuinely interesting. Order it before the table next to you does.
Generic California Chardonnay
The California filler bottles on this list exist to give resort guests something familiar, and they're priced accordingly — meaning you're paying a hotel markup on a wine you could find at any grocery store for a fraction of the cost. With actual Virginia bottles available at the same table, there's no reason to default to the safe California pour.
King Family Vineyards Rosé + Seasonal Salad
A dry, fruit-forward Virginia rosé and a fresh seasonal salad is exactly the kind of low-stakes, high-reward combination this menu is built for — light, bright, and neither one fighting for attention.

The Bistro at Boar's Head isn't a wine destination, but it doesn't embarrass itself either — especially for a resort list, the Virginia producer support is genuine and worth ordering. If you're on property, lean local and you'll leave satisfied.

Oakhart Social's wine list punches well above its weight class for a small plates spot — the range is genuinely exciting and the Virginia representation is the real deal. Markups on the high end will sting if you reach for the Ramey or the top Rhones, but stick to the midrange and the by-the-glass picks and you're drinking well in one of Charlottesville's more interesting rooms.
