The wine list at Scusa lands somewhere between a serious Italian-American dinner house and a Napa name-dropper — and that's not entirely a bad thing. You'll see familiar California heavyweights alongside a handful of Italian labels, which fits the trattoria feel. It's a list built to impress tourists who recognize Rombauer and Jordan, and honestly, it mostly works.
At roughly 55 labels, Scusa punches above what you'd expect from a South Lake Tahoe destination. The Napa Cabernet lineup is the clear centerpiece — Joseph Phelps, Chateau Montelena, Jordan, Frank Family, and Hess Collection Mt. Veeder all make appearances, which is a respectable rollcall. The Italian representation is thinner but meaningful: Castello Banfi's Brunello di Montalcino and the Luigi Righetti Amarone Classico give the list some Old World credibility. What's missing is any real exploration of Southern Italy, Piedmont, or value-driven Italian regionality — it's Tuscany or California, and not much in between.
Twenty-seven options by the glass is genuinely impressive for a mountain-town Italian spot — that's nearly half the list open and pouring. The range spans from approachable house pours in the $7–$10 range up to $18 for something with a bit of pedigree. What we'd want to know is how often those bottles rotate once opened; a 27-option glass list can turn into a 27-option oxidized-wine list if there's no system keeping things fresh.
St. Supéry ÉLU Meritage Napa Valley — $24–$150 range (bottle)
The ÉLU is a Napa Meritage that consistently over-delivers for its price tier — it's the list's smartest play if you want California Cab structure without paying the Phelps or Montelena premium. Ask your server if it's available by the glass.
Amarone Classico Luigi Righetti
Most tables here are ordering Cabs or Rombauer Chard, which means the Righetti Amarone gets overlooked. That's a mistake. Amarone next to Osso Buco is one of the great Italian dinner combinations, and Luigi Righetti is a solid, fairly-priced producer that won't wreck your bill the way a Bertani or Allegrini would.
Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
At $150 on the list, you're paying a steep resort-town markup on a wine that retails around $70–$80. Phelps Insignia it is not — this is their estate Napa Cab, a good wine, but not a $150 bottle. Save this one for a shop with honest pricing.
Amarone Classico Luigi Righetti + Osso Buco
Osso Buco's braised veal shank needs a wine with enough weight and dried-fruit depth to match the richness without drowning it. Amarone's concentrated dried-grape character does exactly that — it's the kind of pairing that makes you feel like you ordered correctly.

Scusa is a reliable wine stop in a town where the bar isn't always high — the glass selection is genuinely broad and the Italian-Napa combo fits the menu. Just watch the markup on the big-name Cabs; the value plays are lower on the list.

The Cork & More is the kind of place that shouldn't work as well as it does — a wine shop and deli hybrid in a tourist ski town charging near-retail prices. We'd absolutely send a friend here, especially one who's been burned by $80 Napa Cabs at resort restaurants one too many times.

Maggie's isn't going to make a wine person drive up from the Bay Area, but for a ski-base hotel restaurant it punches well above its weight — fair markups, considered pours, and a list that treats guests like adults. If you're already at Heavenly Village, you're in good hands.

Evan's is the right place for a proper Tahoe date night, and the wine list won't let you down — as long as you go in knowing it's built for comfort, not discovery. Stick to the Kistler or Flowers and you'll drink well; chase the obvious names and you'll overpay for the privilege.

My Thai is a genuine Wild Card — a family Thai joint that somehow assembled a Napa Cab-heavy wine list with real bottles on it, even if the pairing logic is questionable and the markups climb fast. Come for the green curry, order the Santadi, and marvel at the fact that Heitz Trailside exists on this menu at all.

Il Posto isn't trying to be a wine destination, but it's doing more than most neighborhood Italians bother to do — fair prices, smart BTG options, and enough Italian variety to remind you this is a trattoria, not a Napa Cab house. Send a friend here and tell them to start with the Vermentino.
