Walking into Sam's Social Club, you're immediately reminded you're in Napa — the wine list leads with local heavyweights and doesn't apologize for it. It's resort dining, which means the atmosphere is relaxed and the prices are not. Still, there's enough thoughtfulness in the selections to keep wine-focused diners engaged.
The list sits in that 60–90 label range where a good editor really matters, and Sam's mostly rises to the occasion with a tight Napa Valley focus. Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon anchors the prestige end, which is a smart and historically resonant choice given how close you are to the winery itself. Storybook Mountain Zinfandel is a genuine nod to Calistoga's rustic heritage — it's not the obvious pick, and we respect that. The Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs rounds things out with a California sparkling option that's actually worth ordering, though the list doesn't stray much beyond California borders, which can feel limiting if you're here for a full week.
Ten to fourteen by-the-glass options is a reasonable spread for a resort restaurant, and you're not stuck choosing between generic Chardonnay and anonymous Cab. That said, don't expect the pours to rotate with any urgency — this feels like a list that gets updated seasonally at best. If Schramsberg is available by the glass, that's your opening move.
Storybook Mountain Zinfandel — null
Storybook Mountain is a small, serious producer making age-worthy Zinfandel right in Calistoga's backyard. Seeing it on the list at a resort restaurant is already a win — it's the kind of wine that reminds you where you actually are, and it drinks way above its category.
Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs
Most people skip straight to the reds in Napa, but Schramsberg is one of California's great sparkling houses and the Blanc de Blancs is their benchmark bottling. It's refreshing, food-friendly, and quietly impressive — exactly what you want to kick off a meal on the patio.
Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon
Look, Montelena Cab is legitimately great wine — we're not disputing that. But at a resort markup, you're paying a significant premium on a bottle that's already expensive at retail. If you want to splurge on Montelena, go visit the winery directly. Here, the value math doesn't work in your favor.
Storybook Mountain Zinfandel + Wood-fired pizza
Calistoga Zinfandel and a charred, wood-fired crust is one of those California combinations that just makes sense. The smoky edge on the pizza meets the bramble and spice in Storybook's fruit, and neither one overwhelms the other.
The Bottom Line
Sam's Social Club is a reliable resort wine list — locally rooted, occasionally inspired, and priced like you're on vacation (because you are). Send a friend here if they want to drink good Napa wine without doing homework, just remind them to skip the Montelena unless someone else is paying.

Castello di Amorosa is unabashedly a destination experience, and the wine list reflects that: captive audience, estate-only pours, pricing that leans on the setting as much as the wine. But the Italian-varietal focus is genuinely interesting, the courtyard is a legitimately great place to drink, and if you're already on Highway 29, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon.

The markups are real and the prices are not for the faint of wallet, but if you're going to drop serious money on wine anywhere in Napa Valley, this list at least earns the ask.
