You're sitting in a sun-drenched wine garden adjacent to a mid-century spa, eating green chile stew, and the list in your hand has Chateau Montelena and Schramsberg on it. That's not what you expected, and that's exactly the point. House of Better is a casual, colorful spot that punches considerably above its weight when it comes to what's in the glass.
Twenty-three labels isn't a sprawling cellar, but the team clearly made smart calls with the space they had. The Napa Valley focus is tight and deliberate — Chateau Montelena across Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet, Ridge Three Valleys, Venge, and two serious Anthem Cabernets including a Beckstoffer bottling — this is not the generic California list you'd expect from a health-forward patio spot. The gaps are real: no Oregon, no imported wines, very little outside California. But what's here reflects genuine curatorial intent rather than a distributor's default order.
Eighteen by-the-glass options out of 23 total labels is a remarkably high ratio — basically the whole list is available by the pour, which is exactly what a sunny afternoon wine garden should offer. A sparkling glass at $9 during happy hour is the kind of pricing that makes you order a second one before your first is finished. The selection gives you real range from Schramsberg bubbles down to the Maldonado Chardonnay without forcing you into a bottle commitment.
Ridge Three Valleys Zinfandel — $48/bottle
Ridge Three Valleys consistently retails in the $25–$30 range, so $48 on a restaurant list — especially in Calistoga, where 3x markups are standard — is genuinely fair. It's a well-made, food-friendly Zin that fits the Southwestern menu far better than a big extracted Napa Cab would.
Maldonado Chardonnay
Most people are going to reach for Chateau Montelena on autopilot, and fair enough. But Maldonado is a small Napa producer making restrained, precise Chardonnay that flies under the radar — and in a wine garden setting with veggie-forward food, that focus and freshness is going to serve you better than something bigger and oakier.
Anthem Beckstoffer Cabernet
At $300 a bottle, this is a serious wine from a serious vineyard source — and it's not a bad wine. But drinking a $300 Napa Cab in a casual spa-adjacent patio setting while eating a flatbread is a context mismatch that the wine will lose every time. Save it for somewhere it can actually breathe.
Ridge Three Valleys Zinfandel + Green Chile Stew
Ridge Three Valleys has enough fruit weight and spice to go toe-to-toe with the heat and earthiness of green chile, without the tannin load of a big Cabernet that would just get aggressive with the peppers. This is the pairing that actually makes sense here.

House of Better is the rare casual wine garden where the list was assembled by someone who actually cares — Chateau Montelena and Ridge in a spa courtyard at fair prices is a genuine find. Send your friends here, tell them to start with a $9 sparkling pour and work their way into the Ridge.

Castello di Amorosa is unabashedly a destination experience, and the wine list reflects that: captive audience, estate-only pours, pricing that leans on the setting as much as the wine. But the Italian-varietal focus is genuinely interesting, the courtyard is a legitimately great place to drink, and if you're already on Highway 29, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon.
