Wingman Metrics
Walking into a historic Naperville mansion and getting handed a Spanish-focused wine list feels exactly right — there's an intentionality here that a lot of suburban restaurants can't fake. The list isn't trying to be everything to everyone, and that restraint is mostly a good thing. It's Spain, Spain, and more Spain, which makes sense when you're eating gambas and patatas bravas.
The list leans heavily on the Iberian Peninsula, anchored by familiar Rioja names like Marqués de Riscal and Cune Imperial alongside a Torres Mas La Plana from Penedès that signals someone at least glanced beyond the obvious. Albariño from Rías Baixas shows up as a nod to the white wine side of Spain, which is exactly what this food calls for. The depth starts to thin quickly though — beyond a few headline producers, the list doesn't venture much into Ribera del Duero, Priorat, or Galician reds that would really make it sing. Sixty to ninety bottles sounds generous until you realize most of them are playing the same few notes.
Twelve to twenty by-the-glass options is a solid spread for a suburban tapas spot, and the Spanish focus carries through here too. We'd expect the Albariño to anchor the white pours and at least one Rioja Reserva to hold down the red side, which are both solid choices for a tapas-grazing session. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority — don't expect to find something new every time you visit.
Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva — $45
Marqués de Riscal Reserva is a workhorse Rioja that punches above its restaurant list price — structured Tempranillo with enough backbone to handle the whole tapas spread without demanding your full attention.
Torres Mas La Plana Penedès
Most people at this restaurant are scanning for Rioja and moving on, which means this Cabernet Sauvignon-based Penedès from Torres gets overlooked. Mas La Plana has a real pedigree — it famously beat Bordeaux in a 1979 blind tasting — and it's a genuinely interesting bottle in a list that doesn't take many swings.
Cune Imperial Rioja Gran Reserva
Cune Imperial is a lovely wine, but Gran Reserva bottles at restaurants tend to carry a markup that makes the math hard to justify when the Reserva tier is sitting right there for considerably less. Unless someone else is paying, the step-up in price rarely matches the step-up in pleasure at a tapas pace.
Albariño from Rías Baixas + Gambas al Ajillo
High-acid, saline Albariño and garlicky olive-oil-poached shrimp is one of the few food-wine combinations that feels genuinely inevitable. The wine cuts through the richness, mirrors the coastal character of the dish, and keeps things bright across three or four more plates.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Mesón Sabika is a reliable destination for anyone who wants their wine and food to speak the same language — it's not a deep or adventurous list, but it's honest and appropriate. Send a friend here if they want a romantic Spanish evening in the suburbs without stressing over the wine list.
Downtown Naperville · Naperville · American pub / burgers
Jackson Avenue Pub is not a wine destination, but Wine Wednesdays at half-price make it a legitimately smart stop if you're already there for a burger and a game. Come for the beer, stay for the deal.

Hugo's Naperville is a reliable, well-run steakhouse wine program that will not let you down and will not excite you. Come for the prime beef and oysters, order the Jordan or the Duckhorn, and don't look too hard at the markup on the Pinot Grigio.

Fat Rosie's is a genuinely fun taco and tequila spot that has no business being reviewed for its wine — and that's kind of the point. If your table wants wine, order cocktails instead and save everyone the disappointment.

Vasili's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but the Greek-focused list has enough genuine producers and interesting grapes to reward curious drinkers — especially on Tuesdays when the bottles go half-price. Watch the markups on the Agiorgitiko, lean into the northern Greek reds and the Malagousia, and you'll eat and drink very well along that riverwalk.

Lou Malnati's is a legitimately iconic pizza destination — but the wine list is an afterthought, marked up on cheap bottles with zero curation or ambition. Come for the deep dish, drink beer, and save the wine night for somewhere that cares.

Hotel Arista / CityGate Centre · Naperville · Italian
Che Figata is the rare suburban hotel restaurant with a wine list worth actually engaging with — Italian-focused, sommelier-guided, and broad enough to reward exploration. The markups sting on a few bottles, but the range and program depth make this the best wine bet in Naperville's CityGate orbit.

La Bodega isn't trying to be a wine bar, but the half-price Monday and Thursday deals, Spain-focused list, and food-friendly pours make it the most fun you can have drinking wine with tapas in Kansas City. Go on a Thursday, order the Marqués de Cáceres, and don't overthink it.
