Greek Grapes, Tuesday Deals, Mixed Markups

The wine list at Vasili's is short but punchy — a tight 35-45 labels that actually leans into the Mediterranean theme instead of defaulting to a wall of California Cabernet. You're getting Greek grapes you can't find at the place down the street, and that's worth something. The Tuesday half-price bottle promotion, though, is the real headline.
Vasili's commits to the bit: Greek varieties like Xinomavro, Malagousia, Agiorgitiko, and Assyrtiko anchor the list alongside Italian and Spanish pours, with France presumably filling out the classics. That regional coherence is genuinely rare for a casual Naperville spot, and producers like Alpha Estate, Kir-Yianni, Gerovassiliou, and Gai'a are legitimate — these aren't grocery store labels dressed up in linen napkins. The list is small, but it has a clear point of view. The weak spot: Avaline shows up here, and while it's Instagram-friendly, it's a celebrity-backed organic brand that feels a little out of place next to the serious Greek juice.
The BTG section runs roughly 10-14 options, with glass pours landing between $10-$15 — reasonable for the suburbs. Whether the Greek varieties make it onto the glass list in meaningful numbers is the key question; if you can get Malagousia or Assyrtiko by the glass, that's a genuine win. Rotation and freshness are unknown, so on busy nights, ask how long that bottle's been open.
Papagiannakos Assyrtiko NV — $52
Yes, 117% markup is technically steep, but Assyrtiko at a downtown Naperville restaurant is not a given. This is a real wine from a solid Attica producer — mineral, taut, and built for food. On a Tuesday, that bottle is $26. Even at full price, it's the most honest expression of the list's identity.
Gerovassiliou Malagousia NV
Most tables at Vasili's will order what they recognize. Malagousia is not that. But Gerovassiliou is one of the producers who essentially rescued this ancient Greek variety from extinction, and the wine delivers aromatic intensity — jasmine, peach, citrus — that genuinely surprises people who try it. Skip the safe pick and order this.
Gai'a Monograph Agiorgitiko NV
At $48 on the restaurant list versus $16 at retail, this is a 200% markup — the worst on the list. Gai'a is a fine producer and Agiorgitiko is a fine grape, but this specific bottle at this specific price is a value trap. The Kir-Yianni Ramnista Xinomavro at $72 is a better spend if you want serious Greek red.
Kir-Yianni Ramnista Xinomavro 2019 + Hearth-grilled lamb skewers
Xinomavro is often called the Nebbiolo of Greece — high acid, grippy tannins, earthy and savory. Kir-Yianni's Ramnista is one of the benchmark expressions of the variety. Against charred, fatty lamb off the hearth, those tannins find purchase and the whole thing clicks into place. This is the pairing the list was built for.
Tuesday — Half-price bottles of wine all day every Tuesday with the purchase of any entree. One of the better recurring wine deals in the suburbs — especially useful for working through the Greek section of the list without the markup sting.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Vasili's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but the Greek-focused list has enough genuine producers and interesting grapes to reward curious drinkers — especially on Tuesdays when the bottles go half-price. Watch the markups on the Agiorgitiko, lean into the northern Greek reds and the Malagousia, and you'll eat and drink very well along that riverwalk.

Jackson Avenue Pub is not a wine destination, but Wine Wednesdays at half-price make it a legitimately smart stop if you're already there for a burger and a game. Come for the beer, stay for the deal.

Fat Rosie's is a genuinely fun taco and tequila spot that has no business being reviewed for its wine — and that's kind of the point. If your table wants wine, order cocktails instead and save everyone the disappointment.

Lou Malnati's is a legitimately iconic pizza destination — but the wine list is an afterthought, marked up on cheap bottles with zero curation or ambition. Come for the deep dish, drink beer, and save the wine night for somewhere that cares.

Che Figata is the rare suburban hotel restaurant with a wine list worth actually engaging with — Italian-focused, sommelier-guided, and broad enough to reward exploration. The markups sting on a few bottles, but the range and program depth make this the best wine bet in Naperville's CityGate orbit.
