Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Tapas Barcelona is short — 22 labels — but it earns its keep by staying almost entirely focused on Spain. That regional discipline is refreshing in a world where every tapas spot feels compelled to shoehorn in a California Cab. The price ceiling of $42 a bottle means you're not going to break the bank no matter what you order.
The Spanish backbone is solid: Albariño from Rías Baixas, Garnacha from Calatayud, Tempranillo from Rioja, and Cava from Penedès all show up in credible form. The inclusion of Juan Gil Monastrell from Jumilla is a genuine nod to Spain's more interesting corners. That said, the list isn't without its odd detours — Penfolds Koonunga Hill from Australia and a Malbec from Mendoza feel like they wandered in from a steakhouse. The Rioja representation is modest: El Coto Crianza and a Marques de Caceres Malvasia cover the bases without going deep.
Here's the thing: every bottle on the list is also available by the glass, with pours running $7.50–$10.25. That's a genuinely generous setup for a casual tapas crawl where you want to graze across multiple wines. No rotating specials program, but with 22 glass options at these prices, you can build your own tasting menu without much effort.
Evodia Garnacha, Calatayud — $8.50/glass
Old-vine Garnacha from Calatayud routinely punches above its weight — this one is no exception. It's the kind of earthy, fruit-forward red that makes sense with half the menu and costs almost nothing to find out.
Juan Gil Monastrell, Jumilla
Monastrell is Spain's answer to Mourvèdre — dark, structured, and deeply savory. Most tables walk right past it for the Tempranillo, which is their loss. Juan Gil is a reliable producer and Jumilla is chronically underrated.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz, Australia
At $42 a bottle, you're paying a premium for a grocery-store-tier Australian Shiraz that has no business being on a Spanish wine list. There are better, more interesting options here for less money.
Martin Codax Albariño, Rías Baixas + Gambas al Ajillo
Albariño and shrimp is practically a law in Galicia — the wine's saline edge and citrus snap cut right through the garlic butter and bring the whole dish into focus. Order a glass before your food even arrives.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Tapas Barcelona isn't trying to be a wine destination, but its focused Spanish list, fair pricing, and all-day glass pours make it an easy neighborhood win. Send a friend here if they want good wine with their tapas without overthinking it.
Downtown Evanston · Evanston · American Bistro / Contemporary American
Evanston Corner Bistro isn't trying to be a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — but the Wednesday half-price bottle program and honest pricing make it a genuinely solid neighborhood option. Show up on a Wednesday with a friend, order the Gruet, and stop overthinking it.

Le Tour is quietly doing something better than most of its suburban peers — a focused, French-leaning list with genuine producers that rewards the curious diner. Markups keep it from a higher badge, but this is absolutely worth ordering wine at.

Main Street District / South Evanston · Evanston · New American Pop-Up
The retail pricing model alone makes this one of the most honest wine programs in Evanston — you're getting shop prices with a dinner attached. If Libertad has a pop-up on the calendar, check what's open behind the counter and say yes to the Ayres.

Ten Mile House is a neighborhood spot you go to for ribs and a beer — the wine list is a respectable safety net, not the reason you're here. If you're skipping the beer, the Monastrell or the South African sparkling rosé will keep you perfectly happy.
