Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Hugo's Naperville reads exactly like you'd expect from a polished Gibsons-family steakhouse: California-heavy, classically structured, and built to move bottles of Cakebread and Silver Oak to expense accounts without anyone asking too many questions. There's nothing offensive here, but there's nothing that surprises you either. It's a greatest-hits album from 2004 and the setlist hasn't changed.
The list leans hard on California Cabernet and Chardonnay — Jordan, Silver Oak, Duckhorn, Rombauer — with French support from Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne rounding out the heavy hitters. Italy shows up in the form of recognizable appellations like Chianti and likely some Super Tuscan representation, keeping things approachable for a crowd that knows what it wants. What's missing is any real curiosity: no natural producers, no interesting regional outliers, no reason to linger on the list before defaulting to the Jordan. For a 100-plus-label steakhouse program, the range is narrower than it looks.
Expect 12 to 18 pours covering the usual suspects — a couple of Chardonnays, probably a Sauvignon Blanc, a token rosé, and a lineup of reds anchored by Cabernet. Glass prices in the $12–$22 range are fine for the room, but rotation appears minimal and the by-the-glass program feels like an afterthought relative to the bottle list. If you're going glass-by-glass, ask what's been open longest and steer accordingly.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2018 — $135
At 125% markup, Jordan is the least-gouged bottle on the red side of the list. It's a recognizable, food-friendly Cab that actually delivers for a special occasion without the Silver Oak tax — and at a restaurant where $165 is the next tier up, the relative value is real.
Duckhorn Merlot Napa Valley 2020
Everyone at this table is ordering Cab. The Duckhorn Merlot at $98 is a quieter, rounder choice that holds its own against prime steak and actually works even better with the fish-heavy side of the menu. Most people walk right past it, which means you get a better drinking experience while looking effortlessly low-key about it.
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Alto Adige NV
At $68 on a $25 retail bottle, this is a 172% markup on one of the most ubiquitous restaurant pours in the country. Santa Margherita is a fine wine, but it is absolutely not a $68 wine, and ordering it here means you're subsidizing the brand recognition more than the drinking experience. Pass.
Rombauer Chardonnay Carneros 2021 + Fresh Seafood Platter
Rombauer is a crowd-pleasing, lush Chardonnay with enough fruit and richness to stand up to cold shellfish and briny oysters without drowning them. It's a predictable call, but it works — and at a table full of raw seafood, you want a white that can hold its ground.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Hugo's Naperville is a reliable, well-run steakhouse wine program that will not let you down and will not excite you. Come for the prime beef and oysters, order the Jordan or the Duckhorn, and don't look too hard at the markup on the Pinot Grigio.
Downtown Naperville · Naperville · American pub / burgers
Jackson Avenue Pub is not a wine destination, but Wine Wednesdays at half-price make it a legitimately smart stop if you're already there for a burger and a game. Come for the beer, stay for the deal.

Fat Rosie's is a genuinely fun taco and tequila spot that has no business being reviewed for its wine — and that's kind of the point. If your table wants wine, order cocktails instead and save everyone the disappointment.

Vasili's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but the Greek-focused list has enough genuine producers and interesting grapes to reward curious drinkers — especially on Tuesdays when the bottles go half-price. Watch the markups on the Agiorgitiko, lean into the northern Greek reds and the Malagousia, and you'll eat and drink very well along that riverwalk.

Lou Malnati's is a legitimately iconic pizza destination — but the wine list is an afterthought, marked up on cheap bottles with zero curation or ambition. Come for the deep dish, drink beer, and save the wine night for somewhere that cares.

Che Figata is the rare suburban hotel restaurant with a wine list worth actually engaging with — Italian-focused, sommelier-guided, and broad enough to reward exploration. The markups sting on a few bottles, but the range and program depth make this the best wine bet in Naperville's CityGate orbit.

Kincaid's is exactly what it is — a reliable business-dinner wine list that keeps the table happy without taking any risks. If Monday's half-price bottle promotion holds at this location, it becomes a legitimately solid deal; otherwise, manage expectations and lean into the Port.

Market Street Grill is a solid, dependable restaurant that deserves a more adventurous wine list — the oyster program alone could support something far more interesting than what's here. Come for the seafood, order the Sonoma-Cutrer, and don't spend too much time staring at the bottle list hoping it changes.
