You walk into Mas Tapas expecting a serviceable house Rioja and maybe a Cava, and then the wine list actually hands you a 2008 Vall Llach Priorat and a Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos. In a lively Belmont tapas bar, that's a genuine surprise. This list has opinions.
Thirty-five labels sounds modest, but the curation here punches above its weight — the focus is locked on Spain and it doesn't apologize for it. Rioja, Priorat, Penedès, Galicia, Ribera del Duero, and even the Basque Country all show up, plus a nod to Sherry from Andalusia. There are aged bottles that most casual wine lists wouldn't touch — the El Puntido Gran Reserva 2008 and Vall Llach 2008 prove someone is paying real attention. Gaps are minor: if you want France or California, you're at the wrong restaurant, and that's fine.
Nineteen pours by the glass is an impressive number for a 35-label list, meaning most of what they stock you can actually try without committing to a bottle. Glass pours run $14–$16, which is reasonable for Charlottesville. We'd love to see more rotation, but the breadth — from Txakoli to Galician whites to structured reds — gives plenty to work with.
Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos 2021 — $46
Bierzo Mencia at the floor of the bottle list is a steal. This is a serious red from one of Spain's most respected producers, and at $46 it's the clearest value play on the list — especially when comparable Mencia is pushing $25+ at retail.
Quinta de Muradella Candea Blanco 2022
Most tables at Mas Tapas are ordering Cava or reaching for a Rioja, so this Galician white from Monterrei flies completely under the radar. Monterrei is still obscure enough that even wine-curious guests skip it — their loss.
Vall Llach Priorat 2008
The wine is real and the vintage is legit, but at $175 the markup in this context is hard to swallow. Without retail comparisons confirmed, we can't call it a flat-out gouge — but for a no-reservations tapas bar where bottles share the table with patatas bravas, this price point asks a lot of the room.
Mas Doix Murmuri 2021 + Gambas al ajillo
A Priorat Garnacha blend with grip and dark fruit stands up to the intensity of garlic-forward shrimp without steamrolling it — the wine's structural backbone matches the dish's heat and richness without either one losing the plot.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Mas Tapas is the kind of place that earns a Wild Card badge because nobody walks in expecting a 2008 Priorat and a serious Galician white selection in a Belmont neighborhood spot. The markups keep it from being a destination for bottle hunters, but the by-the-glass depth and Spain-first focus make it one of the more interesting wine experiences in Charlottesville.

Prime 109 is one of the best wine programs in Virginia, full stop — deep list, a sommelier who clearly curated it with intention, and picks that reward curiosity over brand recognition. The markup stings, but in a room this good, with bottles this interesting, you're probably going to forgive it.

Oakhart Social's wine list punches well above its weight class for a small plates spot — the range is genuinely exciting and the Virginia representation is the real deal. Markups on the high end will sting if you reach for the Ramey or the top Rhones, but stick to the midrange and the by-the-glass picks and you're drinking well in one of Charlottesville's more interesting rooms.
