Great Views, Wine List Needs a Lifejacket

Wingman Metrics
The Manhattan skyline hits harder than anything on the wine list. Maddy Rose leans into its waterfront setting with a polished, coastal-Mediterranean vibe — but the wine list reads like someone handed a purchasing manager a list of crowd-pleasing brands and said 'that's enough.' It's safe in a way that feels like a missed opportunity.
Fifty to eighty bottles sounds like room to do something interesting, but the lineup here is a greatest-hits parade: Cakebread, Duckhorn, Jordan, Cloudy Bay, Whispering Angel. These are wines you recognize from airport lounges and hotel minibars, not lists with any real editorial point of view. There's no regional focus to speak of, no emerging producers, and no sign that anyone on staff is particularly passionate about what's in the cellar. The Mediterranean-inspired menu deserves something from, say, Sicily or the Rhône — instead you get Napa and Marlborough.
Ten to fourteen pours by the glass at $13–$20 is a reasonable spread, but expect the same recognizable brands in smaller format. There's no indication the glass list rotates with any intention or that it's being used to highlight producers worth knowing. At these prices, you're paying for the view as much as the wine.
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2023 — $78
It's still overpriced at 117% above retail, but if you're committed to ordering a bottle here, at least Cloudy Bay delivers what it promises — bright, citrusy, and a natural match for the branzino. It's the least egregious option on a list that's working against you.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2019
Jordan doesn't get much love from the wine-nerd crowd because it's 'too accessible,' but that's underselling it. The 2019 is genuinely well-made, with more elegance than the Napa Cab crowd typically expects. If you're at Maddy Rose and someone insists on a red, this is the one with actual character — just brace for the $135 ask.
Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne NV
A 175% markup on Veuve is brazen. You're paying $165 for a bottle that retails for $60 everywhere. Veuve is a fine Champagne, but it's not a fine Champagne at that price. If you want bubbles before dinner, order a glass of something and move on.
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough 2023 + Whole Branzino
Cloudy Bay's herbaceous, citrus-forward style cuts through the richness of a whole roasted branzino and mirrors the brightness of any lemon or herb finish. It's not a revelatory pairing, but it's the most coherent match on a list that wasn't built with the menu in mind.
❌ The Bottom Line
Maddy Rose has the bones of a great wine destination — serious restaurant, beautiful setting, seafood-forward menu — but the wine list is a monument to brand recognition over value. Drink the view, order carefully, and maybe cap it at one bottle.
