Wingman Metrics
The list at Porto by Antonio opens with clear intent — this is an Italian restaurant that takes Italian wine seriously, anchored by Brunello, Barbaresco, Chianti Riserva, and a Super Tuscan or two. It's focused without being stingy, and the 44-label spread covers enough ground to keep a table of mixed tastes reasonably happy. What gives us mild pause is the pricing architecture, which climbs steeply once you move past the entry-level bottles.
The Italian core is strong: Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino at $100 is a serious pour, the Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco at $84 adds Piedmont muscle, and the Gaja Ca' Marcanda Promis 2019 at $93 brings one of Italy's most respected names into an accessible range. The Ruffino Riserva Ducale Oro Chianti ($108) and Rocca delle Macie Riserva Chianti ($60) give you two quality tiers in Tuscany to work with. Beyond Italy, the list takes swings at California — Cakebread at $186, Caymus 2017 at a bruising $560 — and fills out the lower end with South American value picks like Portillo Malbec and Los Vascos. The Sassicaia 2017 at $445 is there for a big occasion, but the gap between the list's entry and high end is wide, and the middle feels a bit thin.
Twenty-three by-the-glass options is a genuinely impressive number for a restaurant this size — it signals that Porto wants casual drinkers and wine-curious tables to feel included, not just the bottle-orderers. Glass prices running $11–$16 are fair for Jersey City. We'd like to know more about rotation and freshness practices, since a list this deep by the glass only works if bottles aren't sitting open for too long.
Gaja Ca' Marcanda Promis 2019 — $93
Promis is a Bolgheri blend from Angelo Gaja's Tuscan estate — one of the great names in Italian wine — and $93 is a price point where you're actually getting close to fair value for what's in the glass. Most places stretch a bottle like this well past $110. Order it.
12 e Mezzo Primitivo
At $35, this southern Italian Primitivo is the kind of bottle that gets overlooked next to the Brunello and the Sassicaia, but Primitivo from Puglia at this price punches with dark fruit, earthiness, and enough structure to hold its own at a pasta-heavy Italian table. It's the smart move when you want something interesting without thinking too hard.
Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Caymus at $560 is an ambush. This wine retails around $75–$85 — even at generous restaurant markup you'd expect to see it in the $150–$180 range. At $560 you're paying for a brand name, not a wine experience. There are better Cabs and better values on this same list.
Bertani Classico Amarone della Valpolicella 2009 + Braised short rib or osso buco
Amarone is built for slow-cooked, deeply savory meat dishes. The 2009 Bertani has the age and structure to match the richness of a braised short rib or osso buco without getting overwhelmed — the wine's dried-fruit intensity and firm tannins cut right through the fat. It's a classic for a reason.
The Bottom Line
Porto by Antonio delivers a credible Italian-forward wine list with genuine high points — Promis, Barbaresco, Brunello — and a by-the-glass program that actually gives people choices. Markups get aggressive at the top, and the Caymus pricing is frankly embarrassing, but if you stick to the Italian core and the smart mid-range picks, you'll drink well here.

Jane Doe is a cocktail bar that quietly assembled a better wine list than most actual restaurants in the area. If you're in Jersey City and someone tells you to skip the wine here, they haven't seen the list.

Madame JC isn't a wine destination — it's a cocktail bar that happens to have one of the most focused and genuinely well-chosen dessert wine lists in Jersey City. Show up after dinner, order the 20-Year Tawny, and thank whoever put this menu together.

Mathews isn't a destination wine list, but it's honest, fairly priced, and more thoughtful than it looks at first glance. Send a friend here if they want a good glass without a lecture.

Ed & Mary's isn't trying to be a wine bar and doesn't need to be — but whoever put the Intérieur Carbonic Zinfandel and Delegati Sparkling Pinot Noir on a 13-bottle bar list deserves a nod. Prices are fair, the whole list pours by the glass, and two genuinely weird options make this worth more than a passing glance.

GP's Hamilton Park isn't a destination wine list, but it's a fair one — honest prices, approachable options, and a by-the-glass program that covers the table without drama. Send your friend here if they want a solid neighborhood pour, not a wine education.

Würst Bar is not a wine destination — it's a cider destination wearing a wine list's clothes, and it's really good at that specific thing. Send your cider-curious friends here without hesitation; tell your Burgundy-obsessed friends to eat somewhere else first.

Sant Ambroeus Palm Beach is a reliable, if unambitious, wine experience — Italy and France, done cleanly, priced for Royal Poinciana Way. If you're here for the scene, the truffle pizza, and a glass of something Italian and uncomplicated, it delivers. Just don't come looking for value or discovery.

Five Corners has stocked four respectable Italian reds and essentially stopped there. Without pricing, pour options, or a list that can accommodate the full table, it's hard to call this a wine program — it's more like a wine shelf. Come for the Italian cooking; manage your expectations on the wine side.

Sotto Sotto is a genuinely Italian wine list in a city that usually settles for Italian-American approximations — the Timorasso, the Lambrusco di Sorbara, the Franciacorta all signal real intent. The glass program is accessible, markups are reasonable, and the bubbles section alone justifies a visit. If you want depth across all of Italy, you'll hit the edges fast at 68 labels, but what's here is well-chosen. Send a friend who likes to drink something they've never heard of.
