Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Mathews is short, familiar, and completely unpretentious — 19 bottles covering the basics without any real surprises. It's the kind of list that won't make a wine nerd's heart race, but it's also not going to embarrass anyone on a first date. What it lacks in ambition, it mostly makes up for in fair pricing.
The list leans heavily on approachable crowd-pleasers: Raeburn Chardonnay, Angeline Pinot Noir, and Whispering Angel Rosé are the kind of names you've seen on a hundred menus. There's a nod toward something slightly more interesting with the Painted Wolf Chenin Blanc from South Africa and the Jacques Dumont Sancerre, both of which suggest someone on staff has at least a passing interest in wines beyond the obvious. The bottle price ceiling sits at $125 (Veuve Clicquot), and outside of that, most bottles land in the $40–$65 range — reasonable for a New Jersey neighborhood spot. Don't come expecting old-world depth or regional exploration; come expecting wines that do their job without drama.
Fourteen of the 19 labels are available by the glass, which is a genuinely good ratio and makes this a solid casual-drinking spot. The happy hour $7 pours (Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, and Rosé) are the kind of deal that keeps regulars coming back. The full by-the-glass program runs $7–$18, so there's room to stretch a little without committing to a bottle.
Painted Wolf Chenin Blanc — $42
South African Chenin Blanc is criminally underrated, and at $42 a bottle this is the most interesting wine on the list by a mile. It's textured, food-friendly, and almost nobody at the table will have heard of it — which is exactly the point.
Jacques Dumont Sancerre
Most people at Mathews are probably reaching for the Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc out of habit, but the Jacques Dumont Sancerre at the same $65 price point is the smarter play — Loire Valley minerality and a leaner, more interesting profile than its New Zealand counterpart.
Whispering Angel Rosé
At $65 a bottle, you're paying mostly for the bottle shape and the Instagram moment. The Calafuria Rosé at $49 is a better, more interesting wine for $16 less. Whispering Angel is lifestyle, not value.
Painted Wolf Chenin Blanc + Roasted chicken or seafood dish
Chenin Blanc's natural acidity and slight honeyed texture make it an ideal partner for anything roasted or lightly briny — it cuts through richness without bulldozing the food.
The Bottom Line
Mathews isn't a destination wine list, but it's honest, fairly priced, and more thoughtful than it looks at first glance. Send a friend here if they want a good glass without a lecture.
· Jersey City · American Bar
Ed & Mary's isn't trying to be a wine bar and doesn't need to be — but whoever put the Intérieur Carbonic Zinfandel and Delegati Sparkling Pinot Noir on a 13-bottle bar list deserves a nod. Prices are fair, the whole list pours by the glass, and two genuinely weird options make this worth more than a passing glance.

Hamilton Park · Jersey City · Italian
GP's Hamilton Park isn't a destination wine list, but it's a fair one — honest prices, approachable options, and a by-the-glass program that covers the table without drama. Send your friend here if they want a solid neighborhood pour, not a wine education.

Würst Bar is not a wine destination — it's a cider destination wearing a wine list's clothes, and it's really good at that specific thing. Send your cider-curious friends here without hesitation; tell your Burgundy-obsessed friends to eat somewhere else first.

Downtown · Jersey City · Australian-influenced, Natural Wine Bar
Frankie is a genuinely surprising wine program hiding inside a casual downtown spot, and the Italian-leaning natural wine list punches well above the Grove Street zip code. If you're in Jersey City and care about what's in your glass, this is where you go.

House of 'Que is a genuinely fun spot for barbecue and live music — just don't come here expecting wine to be part of the experience. Order a beer, eat the brisket, and save your wine night for somewhere that cares.

Edward's is a reliable steakhouse wine list for guests who want Napa Cabs with their dry-aged beef and aren't looking to be challenged. Send a friend here who loves Jordan and Stag's Leap; don't send the one who's been on a natural wine kick.

Western Addition · San Francisco · New American
Progress isn't trying to be the biggest wine list in San Francisco — it's trying to be the most interesting one, and it largely succeeds. If you want Napa Cab and familiar labels, go somewhere else; if you want to drink Grignolino and Furmint with dinner and feel genuinely good about the prices, this is your room.

Paradisaea's wine list punches well above what you'd expect from a San Diego New American — eclectic without being pretentious, fairly priced without being cheap. We'd send a wine-curious friend here and tell them to skip the obvious bottles and dig into the Italian section.

Poppy & Claro's wine program exists to check a box, not to excite you. Unless Flowers Chardonnay by the bottle is exactly what you came for, the cocktail menu might be a better bet.
