Wingman Metrics
The name promises a wine bar experience, and the room delivers the vibe — big bar, stylish bones, the kind of place where you expect the list to have some personality. Flip through the menu and it's California-heavy with a few Mediterranean gestures, which tracks with the kitchen's direction. It's not groundbreaking, but it's curated with some intention.
Neyers shows up in force here — multiple expressions including the Left Bank Red, Ranch Cabernet, and the ÂME Vineyard Cab — which tells you someone made a deliberate call to go deep on one quality producer rather than scatter-shot across a hundred labels. You also get the Bodega Juan Benegas Malbec as a nod toward South America, and the Iron & Sand Cabernet as an entry-level anchor. The Mediterranean-inspired menu suggests this list could benefit from more Old World coverage — some Tempranillo, a Vermentino, even a solid Sangiovese — but what's here is consistent and not randomly assembled. Gaps exist, but they don't embarrass the place.
Two by-the-glass options is genuinely the floor for a restaurant calling itself a wine bar, and it's hard to defend in 2024. If you're with someone who wants red while you want white, you're basically done making choices before the appetizers arrive. We'd love to see this expanded — the bottle list shows enough range to support at least six or eight pours.
Neyers Left Bank Red — $45
Neyers punches above its price point consistently, and a Left Bank-style blend from a producer this reliable is exactly what you want at a Mediterranean table. Fair markup on a wine that earns its keep.
Bodega Juan Benegas Malbec
Most tables here are going to gravitate toward the Neyers Cabs and ignore this one entirely. That's a mistake. Argentine Malbec at a wine bar is often an afterthought, but Benegas is a serious producer — and with braised short rib on the menu, this is the move most people walk right past.
Iron & Sand Cabernet Sauvignon
It's there to anchor the low end of the list, and it does exactly that — nothing more. At a wine bar with better bottles available at a reasonable step up, there's no compelling reason to land here. Order up.
Neyers ÂME Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon + Braised Short Rib
ÂME is Neyers' single-vineyard flagship — structured, dark-fruited, with the kind of grip that needs something fatty and slow-cooked to show its best side. Braised short rib is exactly that counterweight. This is the combination worth spending for.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Smashing Grapes is a dependable wine stop in Annapolis — not thrilling, but not lazy either. For a neighborhood wine bar, the Neyers selections alone give you enough reason to show up; just don't expect the by-the-glass program to keep up with the room's ambitions.
Eastport · Annapolis · American pub fare
Davis' Pub is a great place to drink — just not wine. The list is inoffensive and priced fairly, but it exists as an afterthought in a place where the real action is cold drafts and steamed crabs. Order the Brancott if you must, then pivot to beer.

Chart House Annapolis is a reliable wine list in a genuinely great setting — you'll drink well enough, but you're paying for the view as much as the pour. Go in with eyes open on the markup and lean on the California stalwarts that earned their spots here.

Smashing Grapes is quietly one of the better wine programs in the mid-Atlantic, operating in a market that doesn't always demand it — which makes it even more impressive. Send a friend here, absolutely, and tell them to skip the safe picks.

Red Red Wine Bar is a genuinely fun, accessible spot if you go in knowing what it is: a bubbly-forward wine bar built for socializing and sharing flights, not deep-dive cellar exploration. Send your friend here for a casual night out — just don't send them expecting a sprawling wine list.

Reynolds Tavern is the kind of Wild Card that earns its badge by being completely sincere — a 275-year-old tavern that stocks Vieux Télégraphe and Maryland Albariño without making a big deal about it. If you're in Annapolis and skipping wine here in favor of a generic hotel bar down the street, that's on you.

Blackwall Hitch isn't a wine destination, but it's a reliable spot to drink something decent without getting gouged — especially during happy hour. Send a friend here if they want a glass on the water, not if they're chasing something to talk about.

Maddy Rose has the bones of a great wine destination — serious restaurant, beautiful setting, seafood-forward menu — but the wine list is a monument to brand recognition over value. Drink the view, order carefully, and maybe cap it at one bottle.

City Winery is doing something different in Nashville—an actual wine program in a live music venue that doesn't phone it in. The happy hour tap program and thoughtful selection make this a go-to for anyone tired of the same Broadway bar markup game.
