You're in Helena, Montana — not exactly Napa — and the wine list opens with a Barbaresco from M. de Gresy and a Brunello di Montalcino from Ridolfi. That's not an accident. Someone here actually cares, and it shows the second you sit down at the bar.
Fifty-seven labels is a tight but purposeful list, and the Italian spine is genuinely strong — Borgogno 'No Name' Nebbiolo, Avignonesi 'Grifi', and Ridolfi Brunello alongside the expected Tuscan crowd-pleasers. California gets a respectable slot with Biale 'Black Chicken' Zinfandel and Paul Hobbs Cab, and Washington state sneaks in with Long Shadows 'Pirouette'. The gaps are in natural wine and lighter reds, but for a mid-size city in Montana, this list punches well above its weight class.
Sixteen options by the glass is genuinely impressive for a 57-label list — that's nearly a third of the cellar available without committing to a bottle. The $9.50–$12.50 glass range is refreshingly honest pricing for this caliber of wine. We'd love to see more rotation signal here, but what's poured is solid.
Borgogno 'No Name' Nebbiolo, Italy 2022 — $58
Nebbiolo at this price point from a producer with Borgogno's pedigree is legitimately hard to find in Montana — or most places, frankly. If this lands on a Wednesday at half-price, it's a flat-out steal.
Long Shadows 'Pirouette' Cabernet Blend, WA 2020
Most tables will reach for the Paul Hobbs Cab and pay $150 for the name. Pirouette is a Washington Bordeaux-style blend from one of the state's most underrated projects, and it routinely outperforms its price tag. Snag this one before someone else does.
Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon, California 2021
At $150, you're paying a lot for a famous label. Paul Hobbs makes good wine, but at this markup and with the Pirouette sitting right there, there's no compelling reason to go here unless someone else is picking up the tab.
Avignonesi 'Grifi' Tuscan Blend, Italy 2021 + Charcuterie board
Grifi is a Sangiovese-Cabernet blend with enough grip to cut through cured meats and enough fruit to keep things lively. It's exactly the kind of wine that was born to sit next to a board of salumi and aged cheeses.
Wednesday — The full wine list is half price every Wednesday. No asterisks, no exclusions listed — the whole thing.
