Wingman Metrics
A 61-label list in Helena, Montana is not something you walk into expecting β and yet, here we are. Lucca's opens with serious Italian bone structure: Barbaresco, Brunello, Borgogno. This isn't a list built by someone who just called a local distributor and said 'give me your best sellers.'
Italy anchors the list and anchors it well β M. de Gresy 'Martinega' Barbaresco, Ridolfi Brunello di Montalcino, and the Avignonesi 'Grifi' Tuscan Blend give the Italian side real credibility across price points. California fills the second chair with Chalk Hill, Biale 'Black Chicken' Zinfandel, and Paul Hobbs Cab holding it down at the top end. Washington gets a nod via Long Shadows 'Pirouette', which is a smart, underrated pick that shows someone here actually thinks about the Pacific Northwest. France is thin β a Chablis and a Champagne β but what's there is appropriate rather than obligatory.
Sixteen by-the-glass options is a strong number for a restaurant this size in this market, priced $9.50β$12.50. We'd want to know how often that list rotates, because a static BTG program at a place this focused on the chef's table experience could go stale fast. The pricing is accessible enough that you're not white-knuckling every pour.
Borgogno 'No Name' Nebbiolo, Italy 2022 β $58
Borgogno's 'No Name' is Nebbiolo done right without the Barolo price tag β it's grippy, earthy, and built for Italian food. At $58 on a list that runs to $150, this is where you get the most wine for your money, full stop.
Long Shadows 'Pirouette' Cabernet Blend, WA 2020
Washington Cabernet blends get overlooked whenever California is on the same list, and diners here will almost certainly reach for the Paul Hobbs first. Don't. 'Pirouette' from Long Shadows is a serious, structured red that punches well above its price tier and flies completely under the radar.
Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon, California 2021
Paul Hobbs is excellent wine β nobody's arguing that β but at $150 it's a name-recognition play in a market where the markup has nowhere to hide. The Hobbs Cab retails around $85-90; you're paying a significant premium for the prestige of ordering it out loud. The 'Pirouette' or Brunello get you further.
M. de Gresy 'Martinega' Barbaresco, Italy 2020 + Osso Buco
Barbaresco and braised veal shank is a classic northern Italian combination that exists for a reason β the wine's high acidity and tannin cut through the richness of the braise while the earthy, cherry-driven fruit mirrors the aromatics of the soffritto. The 'Martinega' vineyard bottling has the elegance to stay in the conversation through every bite.

π² The Bottom Line
Lucca's is doing something genuinely ambitious for Helena β a focused, Italy-forward list with real producers and a Wednesday half-price incentive that should have locals showing up weekly. The markups are the main friction point, but if you play Wednesday or stick to the mid-tier Italian bottles, this is one of the better wine experiences in the state.

Mediterranean Breeze is doing what it says on the tin β a relaxed room, recognizable bottles, and $6 glass pours that won't break anyone's budget. Skip the mid-tier markups, aim for Jordan or Kim Crawford, and you'll have a perfectly decent night.
