Walking into Lovina, you half-expect a wine list padded with whatever the distributor pushed that week — but this one earns a second look. For a neighborhood bistro in Calistoga, the list punches above its weight class, leaning hard into local producers that actually mean something. It's the kind of list that makes you wish you'd skipped the cocktail.
The list runs 80–120 labels and stays unapologetically rooted in Napa and California, which makes sense given you're sitting in the heart of it. Chateau Montelena's 2009 Estate Cab and La Jota's 2014 Howell Mountain Merlot give the list some serious cellar credibility, while Storybook Mountain's 2021 Estate Zinfandel from the Mayacamas Range is the kind of pick that signals someone actually thought about this. The one notable gap is depth outside California — if you're hunting for a Burgundy or a Barolo, you're in the wrong dining room. But Lingua Franca's 2021 Avni Chardonnay from Willamette Valley shows at least a mild curiosity beyond the state line.
With 10–16 pours available, the by-the-glass program is respectable for a bistro at this scale. Schramsberg's 2022 Estate Blanc de Blancs from just down the road in Calistoga is the obvious opener — local, polished, and genuinely exciting in a way that most BTG bubbles aren't. Rotation details are thin, and we didn't see evidence of an active program swapping in new pours regularly, which keeps this from being a true by-the-glass destination.
Storybook Mountain Vineyards 2021 Estate Zinfandel — null
Mayacamas Range Zinfandel from one of the appellation's most serious producers — this isn't jammy grocery store Zin, it's structured and worth every dollar. In a list weighted toward Cabernet, this is the pick that drinks differently and probably costs less than the big-name Napa reds.
Lingua Franca 2021 Avni Chardonnay
In a room full of Napa Cabernet devotees, this Willamette Valley Chardonnay from Larry Stone and Master Sommeliers gets overlooked — which is a mistake. It's one of Oregon's most serious whites, and it stands out sharply against the California-heavy surroundings.
Cardinale 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon
Cardinale is undeniably impressive wine, but restaurant markup on a bottle this prestigious turns what's already an expensive purchase into a genuinely painful one. If you're going to spend at that tier, you're better off doing it at a wine bar with a proper cellar program and staff who can contextualize it.
Shafer 2021 Relentless Syrah + Bistro-style burger
Shafer's Relentless is a Napa Syrah with enough dark fruit and structure to hold up to a well-built burger without overwhelming it — it's the kind of pairing that makes a $20 entree feel like a serious dinner.

Lovina is a genuinely pleasant surprise for a Calistoga bistro — thoughtful local producers, a few cellar-worthy bottles, and a casual setting that doesn't charge you for the ambiance. Markups keep it from being a destination wine experience, but if you're already eating here, the list is absolutely worth your attention.

Castello di Amorosa is unabashedly a destination experience, and the wine list reflects that: captive audience, estate-only pours, pricing that leans on the setting as much as the wine. But the Italian-varietal focus is genuinely interesting, the courtyard is a legitimately great place to drink, and if you're already on Highway 29, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon.
