Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Grille 39 reads exactly like you'd expect from a Renaissance hotel dining room — familiar names, clean formatting, zero surprises. It's not trying to impress anyone who knows wine, and it's not pretending to. What it is doing is giving the guy in from Cincinnati for a Tuesday meeting something recognizable to order without stress.
The list leans heavily on California and the Pacific Northwest, with a nod to New Zealand via Kim Crawford. You're not going to find Grower Champagne or anything from the Jura here — the producers skew commercial and approachable: Rombauer, Jordan, Meiomi. That's not a crime, but it does mean the list tops out fast. Gaps are everywhere outside the New World, and anything remotely adventurous is conspicuously absent.
Twelve to eighteen options by the glass is genuinely decent for a hotel restaurant, and the range covers the bases — whites, reds, and presumably a sparkling token somewhere. The pours won't challenge you, but they won't embarrass you either. Rotation appears minimal; what you see today is probably what you'll see next month.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc — $12
It's the floor of the glass pour range and it delivers exactly what it promises — bright, zippy, crowd-friendly. Order it with the grilled salmon and move on with your evening.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon
Jordan gets overlooked because it's been on every steakhouse list since 1995, but that reputation is earned. It's a genuinely well-made Alexander Valley Cab and one of the few bottles here that has some actual character behind it.
Rombauer Chardonnay
Hotel markup on an already-expensive bottle turns Rombauer into a tough sell. You're paying a significant premium for a wine that's available at every Total Wine in America. Save it for when you're at home and paying retail.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon + Filet Mignon
Classic for a reason. The Jordan has enough structure to hold up to the beef without bulldozing it, and the filet's cleaner flavor profile doesn't need anything more aggressive.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Grille 39 is fine — and fine is the ceiling. If you're staying at the hotel and don't want to drive anywhere, the wine list will get you through dinner without incident. Just don't go out of your way for it.
Northwest Carmel · Carmel · Upscale Italian
Convivio is a reliable wine destination for Northwest Carmel — the Italian focus is coherent, the top-tier bottles are legitimate, and it'll satisfy most tables without complaint. The markups sting a bit and the list plays it too safe to earn a higher badge, but if you're in the neighborhood and want a proper bottle with dinner, you won't leave disappointed.

Aberdeen Social House is doing more with its wine list than the address or the concept would lead you to believe, and Rootstock's global curation keeps it from feeling like an afterthought. Not a destination wine program yet, but a genuinely solid call for the north side of Indy.

Café Patachou is a genuinely good café that simply doesn't care about wine — and that's fine, because neither does most of its lunch crowd. Come for the French toast, grab a Ramona if you need bubbles, and don't come here expecting anything resembling a wine program.

Mezzo is a perfectly comfortable neighborhood Italian spot with a wine list that matches its vibe — approachable, familiar, and not trying too hard. If you know what you're doing, steer toward the Chianti Classico options and away from the marquee brands; if you don't, you'll still have a fine glass of wine with your pasta.

Tucci's Carmel isn't trying to reinvent wine in Indiana, and that's fine — it's a reliable, Italian-focused list that does its job alongside good food. Show up on a Monday, grab a bottle of Tignanello at half price, and you're having a genuinely great night.

Juniper on Main isn't trying to be a wine destination, and that honesty is actually refreshing. Show up at 3:30 on a Tuesday, order a half-price glass, and let the shrimp and grits do the heavy lifting.
