You walk into what looks like a handsome craftsman gastropub — dark wood, low light, garden patio out back — and then the wine list lands on the table and reframes everything. This is not a burger-and-Cab-by-default situation. Someone here thought hard about this list, and it shows before you even flip past page one.
One hundred and fifty labels anchored firmly in California, but not lazily so — Paul Hobbs shows up in multiple iterations (Beckstoffer Dr. Crane, Nathan Coombs Estate, Ross Station, Katherine Lindsay), and there's a Burgundy pocket that earns its place, including the Domaine de L'Arlot Les Suchots 1er Cru Vosne Romanée 2022 and a Maison Roche de Bellene Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru 1995 that has no business being on a gastropub list — in the best way. The Champagne section is a genuine flex: Krug Grande Cuvée, Dom Pérignon Luminous Rosé 2006, Cristal 2007, and the Salon Le Mesnil 2012 for those who feel like burning it all down. The wildcard here is the Yacoubian-Hobbs Areni from Armenia, a single bottle that signals genuine curiosity on someone's part — a taco joint with a Pétrus makes a statement, and so does a Napa gastropub with an Armenian Areni.
Twelve options is a respectable program for a place this size, ranging from $12 to $25 a glass — and that range gives you real entry points without feeling like the BTG list is just dumping ground for slow movers. We'd expect the Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc and Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs to rotate through glass pours given the caliber of the list, though the program doesn't appear to change frequently enough to reward repeat visits.
Crocus 'L'Atelier' Malbec de Cahors France 2020 — $48
On a list stuffed with three-figure Napa Cabs, this southwest France Malbec stands out as an honest, food-friendly pour at a price that doesn't require a budget meeting. Cahors Malbec is darker and earthier than its Mendoza cousins — it's built for food, and $48 in this room is a genuine deal.
Yacoubian-Hobbs Areni Vayots Dzor Armenia 2022
Most tables in a Napa gastropub are going to order a Cab without looking past page two. That's fine. But the Yacoubian-Hobbs Areni from Armenia — a collaboration with Paul Hobbs from one of the world's oldest wine regions — is the kind of bottle that makes a meal memorable. Areni Noir is a grape almost nobody outside Armenia knows, and this bottle exists because someone on this team is paying attention.
Kongsgaard 'The Judge' Napa Valley Chardonnay 2018
At $750 a bottle in a restaurant setting, you're paying a serious premium on a wine that retails in the $300–$350 range when you can find it. Kongsgaard is genuinely exceptional and The Judge deserves its reputation — but the markup here is hard to swallow. If you want to spend this kind of money, the Domaine Leflaive Clavoillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 2022 is a better use of your evening.
Turley Rattlesnake Ridge Zinfandel Howell Mountain 2022 + Duck Confit
Turley's Howell Mountain Zinfandel has the structure and dark fruit concentration to stand up to rich, slow-rendered duck without steamrolling it. The wine's natural acidity does the work you'd otherwise need a sauce for — cuts the fat, lifts the fruit, and makes the whole plate feel more alive. At $115, it's not cheap, but it's the right call.
🎲 The Bottom Line
Goose & Gander is a gastropub wearing a serious wine list under its flannel shirt — the markups at the high end are steep enough to sting, but the range, the depth, and the presence of an Armenian Areni and a 1995 Burgundy Grand Cru on the same list as a G&G burger earns genuine respect. Send your wine-curious friends here and tell them to look past the Cabs.

The pricing is unambiguously steep, but so is the depth of what's in that cellar, and the chef's counter format makes the whole thing feel like a genuine occasion rather than just an expensive dinner.
