You walk into what looks like a breezy Napa bistro and then you see the wine list — and it stops you cold. This is not a neighborhood restaurant playing house with a few local Cabs; this is a serious, curated program wearing casual clothes. The range from $58 ZD Chardonnay to a $1,850 Pierre Girardin Bâtard-Montrachet tells you immediately that someone here gives a damn.
The core is unapologetically Napa and California — Spottswoode, Kongsgaard, Hourglass, Smith Madrone, Faust, and Marcassin all appear, covering whites and reds across the valley floor and mountain districts with genuine depth. But the Old World component is what elevates this from regional showcase to real wine destination: Dauvissat Chablis in two vintages, Coche-Dury Meursault, Domaine Chave Hermitage, Pascal Cotat Sancerre, Thibaud Boudignon Savennières, and Huet Vouvray signal a buyer who reads beyond Wine Spectator. The Champagne section is its own beast — Krug in three iterations, Bollinger, Billecart-Salmon Rosé, Ruinart, Dom Pérignon back to 2000 — for a bistro, that's borderline absurd in the best possible way. The one genuine gap is depth in red Burgundy and Southern Hemisphere wine, but given everything else on offer, it's hard to hold that against them.
Eighteen pours by the glass is a serious commitment for a restaurant this size, covering sparkling, whites, rosé, and reds with actual ambition — Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs, Hourglass HGIII Cabernet, and Opus One Overture all available by the glass is genuinely remarkable. Glass prices run $14–$95, which is a wide enough spread to accommodate both the midweek dinner crowd and the person who just sold a startup. The rotation doesn't appear to change frequently, but with Overture and Hourglass poured by the glass, you're not exactly suffering.
ZD Napa Valley Chardonnay 2024 — $58
ZD is a reliably well-made, full-bodied Napa Chard that holds its own on a list full of trophy bottles. At $58 on a list that runs to $1,850, it's the most accessible entry point that still tastes like it belongs here — and it does.
Smith Madrone Riesling Spring Mountain District 2019
Smith Madrone is one of Napa's great kept secrets — a Spring Mountain family operation that has been making Riesling since the 1970s when everyone else was ripping it out. At $85, this is a genuinely distinctive, age-worthy white that most tables will skip in favor of Chardonnay. Their loss, your gain.
Faust Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2023
At $236 a bottle, Faust is doing a lot of work on the strength of its Quintessa association and slick marketing. It's a perfectly fine Napa Cab, but on a list that also carries Spottswoode, Hourglass, and Kongsgaard, paying this much for Faust feels like ordering the house burger at a steakhouse.
Alphonse Mellot 'La Moussière' Sancerre 2023 (half bottle) + Seasonal vegetable small plates
The herbaceous snap and citrus-driven acidity of Mellot's La Moussière — one of the benchmark Sancerres at this price — cuts through anything rich and lifts anything bright. Against Charlie's rotating seasonal vegetable plates, which lean on char, acid, and fresh herbs from the hearth, this half bottle is exactly the right size and exactly the right wine.
The Bottom Line
Charlie's is punching well above its bistro weight class — the list is deep, the by-the-glass program is genuinely impressive, and the Old World selections show a buyer with real range and curiosity. Markups climb steeply toward the top of the list, but if you navigate carefully, you eat and drink exceptionally well in one of Napa's most relaxed rooms.

Elsewhere is doing something genuinely useful in St. Helena: giving people a place to drink well after dinner without the pageantry of a tasting room or the markup theater of a hotel bar. We can't confirm every bottle or price point from here, but a sommelier-driven list with Napa, Burgundy, and Bordeaux range plus honest small plates earns a look. Go in, talk to the staff, and let them guide you — that's exactly what this kind of place is built for.

The Saint is a genuinely fun outlier — a 20-label list anchored by a solid house label and an ambitious Champagne section is not what you expect from a lounge in St. Helena, and that surprise is worth something. Markups run steep across the board, and the narrow range means this isn't your destination for a deep wine exploration. But if you want to pop Schramsberg or work through the Night Night lineup in a relaxed setting, it delivers exactly what it promises.

Clif Family earns the Wild Card badge because it genuinely shouldn't work — a food truck, an energy bar brand, and Napa Cab on a Main Street patio — and yet it does. Send a friend here if they think Napa tasting rooms are too uptight; this is the antidote.
