Walking into Cafe Fiore feels like someone shrunk a Roman trattoria and dropped it in the Sierra Nevada — candlelit, tight quarters, and a wine list that's clearly been curated with some intention. The list skews Italian and Californian, which makes sense, and it doesn't try to be everything to everyone. For a ski town spot, this is a notch above what you'd expect.
The list leans on Italian stalwarts and California crowd-pleasers, with Antinori Tignanello and Gaja Barbaresco anchoring the serious end — solid choices that signal someone actually thought about this. Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva and Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio fill out the approachable middle, giving date-night diners something safe to land on. France gets a nod but doesn't dominate, and there's no deep dive into grower Champagne or anything adventurous. The gaps are real — no southern Italian, no skin-contact wines, nothing that'll make a wine nerd lean forward — but for a 10-table romantic Italian in Tahoe, the coverage is honest and functional.
Eight by-the-glass options in the $14–$20 range is a reasonable spread for a restaurant this size, though we'd love to see a touch more rotation. What's poured by the glass isn't confirmed from the list, but the price ceiling suggests you're not getting the Tignanello or Gaja by the stem — expect the workhorse bottles to carry the glass program. It's perfectly fine for a second glass over tiramisu; don't expect to be surprised.
Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva — $50–$60
Ruffino's Riserva punches above its price point — it's structured enough to hold its own next to veal or a filet, and at the lower end of this list's bottle range, it's the most honest spend on the menu.
Antinori Tignanello
Most tables at a ski resort Italian joint will grab the Caymus out of habit, but Tignanello — a Sangiovese-Cabernet blend from one of Tuscany's great estates — is the move for anyone who wants to drink something with actual history and complexity. It belongs at this table far more than it might seem.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus is everywhere, and the markup at a spot like this will sting. It's a fine wine that's been so overexposed it's practically a brand exercise at this point — and you'll pay a premium for the name recognition alone. Spend that money on the Tignanello instead.
Gaja Barbaresco + Filet Mignon Special
Gaja Barbaresco is Nebbiolo at its most commanding — structured tannins, dried cherry, tar, and roses — and it meets a well-seared filet exactly where it needs to be met. This is the pairing that justifies splurging on a Tuesday night in Tahoe.

Evan's is the right place for a proper Tahoe date night, and the wine list won't let you down — as long as you go in knowing it's built for comfort, not discovery. Stick to the Kistler or Flowers and you'll drink well; chase the obvious names and you'll overpay for the privilege.

My Thai is a genuine Wild Card — a family Thai joint that somehow assembled a Napa Cab-heavy wine list with real bottles on it, even if the pairing logic is questionable and the markups climb fast. Come for the green curry, order the Santadi, and marvel at the fact that Heitz Trailside exists on this menu at all.
