The wine list at Zio Sal doesn't try to impress you with a leather-bound tome — it just shows up with a focused, Italy-first approach and doesn't embarrass itself. Seventy-two labels is a manageable number, and the price ceiling of $250 signals they're not trying to be a cellar-deep destination. What lands immediately is the commitment to Italian regional identity: this isn't a list that treats Chianti as a checkbox.
The backbone of this list is solidly Tuscan — multiple Chianti expressions from Sanguineti ($42), Cafaggio Classico ($58), and Uggiano Riserva ($50) give you a proper price ladder to climb depending on your mood. Beyond that, the Ridolfi Rosso di Montalcino at $58 is the kind of bottle that shows someone actually thought about this list, and the Prunotto Nebbiolo adds a northern Italian dimension that most Italian-American spots in the suburbs wouldn't bother with. Whites get similar respect: the Ca' dei Frati I Frati Lugana and Solea Falanghina are genuinely interesting choices that go well beyond the usual Pinot Grigio-and-call-it-a-day laziness. There's a Castelvecchio Cabernet Franc and a Guado al Tasso Vermentino that round out a list with real personality, even if it doesn't venture far outside Italian varietals.
Twenty-four by-the-glass options is a strong number — you're not getting stuck with two reds and a sad Chardonnay. The glass range tops out at $15, which is genuinely reasonable for the Pacific Northwest in 2024. Draft wine is on the menu too, which keeps casual weeknight pours accessible without killing the vibe.
Sanguineti Chianti — $42
Forty-two dollars for a Chianti at a sit-down Italian restaurant is a fair deal, full stop. This is the entry point to the Tuscan section and it's priced like the kitchen actually wants you to order a bottle with dinner.
Ca' dei Frati I Frati Lugana
Most people at an Italian restaurant are going to order the Pinot Grigio without looking further. I Frati Lugana from Ca' dei Frati is a genuinely serious white — Trebbiano di Lugana from the southern tip of Lake Garda, structured and mineral in a way that Pinot Grigio almost never is. It's the kind of bottle that makes you feel like you found something.
Mussio Pinot Grigio
At $48 a bottle, this is the obvious order for guests who aren't paying attention to the list — and that's exactly why you should skip it. There are far more interesting whites here at similar or lower price points. Pinot Grigio at this price just doesn't pull its weight when Lugana and Falanghina are both on the same list.
Ridolfi Rosso di Montalcino + Braised short rib or osso buco
Rosso di Montalcino is basically Brunello's younger, more approachable sibling — still Sangiovese, still carrying that earthy Tuscan structure, but ready to drink now. Against a braise, the wine's acidity cuts through the fat while the fruit holds up to the richness. It's a natural.
The Bottom Line
Zio Sal isn't trying to be a wine destination, but it's doing the work to make sure wine-curious diners in Redmond don't have to settle. Solid Italian focus, fair pricing, and enough depth to reward someone who actually looks at the list.
