Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Tropea feels like it was curated by someone who genuinely loves Italy but stopped updating their bookmarks around 2018. It's an all-Italian lineup — which we respect — but the ambition caps out at the usual suspects rather than pushing into anything that would make a real wine nerd lean in.
The list runs 50–100 bottles and stays firmly within the Italian canon: Brunello di Montalcino, Barolo from Piedmont, and the requisite Super Tuscan anchor in the form of Antinori's Tignanello. Those are serious wines, and their presence signals that someone here cares. What's missing is anything south of Tuscany or north of Piedmont in a meaningful way — no Etna Rosso, no Friulian whites, no Aglianico to speak of. It's a solid list for someone who wants the hits, but it's not built for the curious drinker who's already heard all these songs.
The by-the-glass program clocks in at 8–15 options, which is a respectable spread for a neighborhood trattoria. Don't expect the pours to rotate aggressively — the selection feels static rather than seasonal. What's here works well enough with the menu, but you won't stumble onto anything unexpected.
Brunello di Montalcino — null
If you're going to spend money here, this is where to put it. Brunello at a neighborhood Italian spot typically carries lighter markup than at a destination restaurant, and Tropea's Montalcino selections give you genuine Sangiovese gravitas without a downtown Bellevue surcharge — assuming you catch it on the right night.
Barolo (Piedmont selection)
Most tables at Tropea are ordering Chianti or going straight to Tignanello. The Barolo is sitting there being ignored, which is a shame — Nebbiolo with housemade pasta is one of the great underappreciated combos in Italian dining, and at a spot like this, the markup on it is likely less punishing than the flagship Supertuscans.
Antinori Tignanello
Tignanello is a great wine. It's also one of the most recognized labels in Italian wine, which means it almost always carries a significant restaurant premium. At Tropea's price tier, you're paying for the name recognition more than any unique cellar advantage — and you can almost certainly find it closer to retail elsewhere.
Brunello di Montalcino + Spaghetti alle Vongole
Counterintuitive on paper — big red with shellfish pasta — but Brunello's acidity and earthiness play surprisingly well against briny clams and olive oil when the wine has some age on it. It's the kind of pairing that sounds wrong until it doesn't.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Tropea is the kind of neighborhood Italian spot where the wine list does its job without breaking any new ground — reliable, Italian-focused, and slightly overpriced in spots. Send a friend here who wants a solid Brunello with their pasta, not a friend who wants to be surprised.

Barking Frog is the kind of wine program you want to find at a wine country lodge — regionally committed, staffed by someone who gives a damn, and built around the same local ethos as the kitchen. Markup is the only real friction; everything else earns its reputation.

Red Robin's wine program is an afterthought dressed as a bar menu — order a craft beer or a cocktail and don't look back. If someone at the table insists on wine, point them toward the rosé and change the subject.

Three Lions is a genuinely fun pub for watching a match over a cold pint — but the wine list is purely incidental, maintained with minimal effort and zero ambition. Come for the football, the beers, and the bangers and mash; if wine is your thing, drink something else tonight.

JJ Mahoney's is a good pub for a pint and some fish and chips — but the wine list is purely functional, not worth seeking out. If wine is your priority tonight, eat here and drink somewhere else after.

Brown's Stockyard Exchange is the wine equivalent of a reliable truck: won't break down, won't blow your mind. If you're eating here for the steaks — and you probably should be — order the Columbia Crest, get out of the way, and let the food do the work.

Vicino is a genuinely surprising wine program hiding inside a casual pizza concept — the Italian-focused list has real depth and some prestige bottles that belong in a much fancier room. Markups on the top shelf are aggressive, but if you stick to the mid-tier and the glass pours, you're eating well and drinking better than you had any right to expect.

The Cellar is one of Florida's most surprising wine lists — serious depth, marquee producers, and a genuine commitment to Italian and classic French selections that punches way above Daytona's weight class. Markup is aggressive across the board, but if you navigate toward the mid-tier Italian bottles, you'll drink very well.
