Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Vieste isn't trying to be everything β it's trying to be Puglia, and it mostly succeeds. You won't find a Napa Cab or a Marlborough Sauv Blanc anywhere near this thing, which is either a dealbreaker or a relief depending on who you are. We're firmly in the relief camp.
This is a tight Southern Italian focus β Puglia anchors the list with Primitivo di Manduria and Negroamaro doing the heavy lifting on the red side, while Fiano di Avellino and Verdeca from Puglia handle the whites with more personality than most Newport restaurants have any right to offer. Campania and Sicily round things out, keeping the regional story coherent without feeling like a geography lesson. The list is short β probably 30 to 50 bottles β but nearly every pick has a reason to exist here, which is more than you can say for most $$$ Italian spots. The gap is anything outside Southern Italy, so if your table has a Barolo loyalist, they're going to have a bad time.
Eight to twelve pours by the glass is a solid range for a room this size, and the focus stays true to the list β expect Negroamaro and Fiano to anchor the BTG program. Rotation isn't confirmed, but the list feels curated enough that whoever built it didn't just staple on the cheapest options from a distributor sheet.
Primitivo di Manduria β $48
Primitivo di Manduria is deeply underrated on the American restaurant circuit β big, dark fruit, earthy backbone, and it reads like a $70 bottle from a more fashionable region. At this price point in Newport, it's the move.
Verdeca
Most tables will walk right past it and order the Fiano, but Verdeca is the quiet weirdo on this list β a native Puglian white with bright acidity, herbal edges, and enough texture to hold up to anything coming out of that kitchen.
Fiano di Avellino
It's a fine wine and it belongs on this list, but Fiano di Avellino has become the default 'fancy Italian white' at restaurants everywhere β you've had it, you know what it is, and the Verdeca right next to it is more interesting for probably the same price.
Negroamaro + Orecchiette
Negroamaro has enough earthy grip and dark berry depth to match the richness of a braised or sauced orecchiette without steamrolling it β this is the pairing Puglia invented, and Vieste is basically giving you the hometown version of both.
π² The Bottom Line
Vieste isn't a destination wine list, but it's a genuinely honest one β a small, region-focused selection that actually matches the food and the room. Send a friend here if they're curious about Southern Italian grapes and tired of the same ten wines on every Newport menu.
Outskirts / North End Β· Newport Β· Farm-to-Table / Winery Restaurant
Brix isn't trying to be a destination wine list β it's trying to be a great ambassador for one vineyard's work, and it mostly succeeds. Send your curious friends here; send your Burgundy obsessives somewhere else.

Lower Thames Β· Newport Β· Farm-to-Table / New American
TSK is quietly one of the better wine lists in Newport, which is a town that doesn't exactly set a high bar β but this one would hold its own in most cities. If you're eating farm-to-table food and want a bottle that actually matches the kitchen's ethos, this is your spot.

Mamma Luisa isn't a wine destination, but it's a solid, honest Italian list that does right by the food coming out of the kitchen. Send a friend here for a bottle of Barbera and a bowl of homemade pasta and they'll thank you.

Downtown / Bannister's Wharf Area Β· Newport Β· New American small plates with Mediterranean and raw bar focus
Stoneacre Garden punches above its weight for a patio bar on the Newport waterfront β it's not a destination wine list, but it's a thoughtful one built around the food, and that's rarer than it should be. If you're here for oysters and small plates, you'll drink well without overthinking it.

Bowen's Wharf Β· Newport Β· Seafood
The Lobster Bar isn't a wine destination, but it's a perfectly competent list for what the restaurant is β a casual waterfront spot where the lobster is the star. Order the Sancerre, eat the oysters, watch the boats.

The Reef isn't trying to be a wine destination and it doesn't pretend to be one β it's a lively harborfront spot with a serviceable, crowd-pleasing list that gets the job done alongside great seafood and better views. Send your friends here for the lobster roll and a glass of rosΓ©, not for a Burgundy deep-dive.
