Wingman Metrics
You pull into a working vineyard and walk into a restaurant that actually smells like farm β in the best way. The list is short and almost entirely Newport Vineyards estate wines, which is either charming or limiting depending on your mood. We'd call it charming.
This is a single-producer list, full stop. Everything pours from Newport Vineyards' own estate in the Southeastern New England AVA, which means no deep cellar rabbit holes or imported discoveries β what you see is what they grow. The range covers white, rosΓ©, red, and a Vidal Blanc that nods to the region's cold-climate hybrid tradition. The Cabernet Franc and 'Harvest' Red Blend show that Rhode Island can do red wine with some backbone when the vintage cooperates. Gaps are obvious β no aged bottles, no outside producers for contrast β but within its lane, the list is coherent and honest.
The by-the-glass program runs 12-20 options, nearly all estate pours, which means you can essentially work through the Newport Vineyards portfolio over the course of a meal. Rotation appears tied to vintage availability rather than any formal seasonal program. If you're here to taste Rhode Island terroir, this is exactly what you want; if you need a Burgundy, you're at the wrong table.
Newport Vineyards Pinot Gris β $35
Pinot Gris from this latitude is a legitimately interesting experiment, and at this price point on an estate list it's a steal compared to what Alsace or Oregon charges for the same grape. Order it.
Newport Vineyards Vidal Blanc
Most people walk past it because Vidal sounds like a shampoo brand, but this cold-hardy hybrid is one of New England's most honest white grapes β crisp, slightly tropical, and completely at home next to anything pulled from the ocean. Worth the detour.
Newport Vineyards 'Harvest' Red Blend
The ambition is there but the execution is uneven β 'Harvest' Red Blends at winery restaurants tend to be the catch-all for grapes that didn't quite make the cut elsewhere. Drink the Cab Franc instead and let this one stay on the shelf.
Newport Vineyards RosΓ© + Rhode Island Farmed Oysters
Dry, bright, and coastal β this rosΓ© is essentially the vinous equivalent of a salt breeze off Narragansett Bay. It cuts the brine on the oysters without steamrolling them, and the whole thing feels like the most Rhode Island thing you could possibly do at lunch.
π² The Bottom Line
Brix isn't trying to be a destination wine list β it's trying to be a great ambassador for one vineyard's work, and it mostly succeeds. Send your curious friends here; send your Burgundy obsessives somewhere else.
Lower Thames Β· Newport Β· Farm-to-Table / New American
TSK is quietly one of the better wine lists in Newport, which is a town that doesn't exactly set a high bar β but this one would hold its own in most cities. If you're eating farm-to-table food and want a bottle that actually matches the kitchen's ethos, this is your spot.

Lower Thames / Residential Edge Β· Newport Β· Classic Italian
Mamma Luisa isn't a wine destination, but it's a solid, honest Italian list that does right by the food coming out of the kitchen. Send a friend here for a bottle of Barbera and a bowl of homemade pasta and they'll thank you.

Lower Thames Β· Newport Β· Italian (Apulian/Seafood-Focused)
Vieste isn't a destination wine list, but it's a genuinely honest one β a small, region-focused selection that actually matches the food and the room. Send a friend here if they're curious about Southern Italian grapes and tired of the same ten wines on every Newport menu.

Downtown / Bannister's Wharf Area Β· Newport Β· New American small plates with Mediterranean and raw bar focus
Stoneacre Garden punches above its weight for a patio bar on the Newport waterfront β it's not a destination wine list, but it's a thoughtful one built around the food, and that's rarer than it should be. If you're here for oysters and small plates, you'll drink well without overthinking it.

Bowen's Wharf Β· Newport Β· Seafood
The Lobster Bar isn't a wine destination, but it's a perfectly competent list for what the restaurant is β a casual waterfront spot where the lobster is the star. Order the Sancerre, eat the oysters, watch the boats.

Howard Wharf / Lower Thames Β· Newport Β· Waterfront American / Seafood
The Reef isn't trying to be a wine destination and it doesn't pretend to be one β it's a lively harborfront spot with a serviceable, crowd-pleasing list that gets the job done alongside great seafood and better views. Send your friends here for the lobster roll and a glass of rosΓ©, not for a Burgundy deep-dive.
