Wingman Metrics
Seven labels isn't a lot, but at a pizza joint in San Marcos, Texas, we weren't expecting a Burgundy cellar. What we did find is a short list that actually makes sense β Italian-leaning, food-friendly, and priced like they want you to order a second bottle.
The list leans hard into Italy, which is the right call for a pizza-and-pasta menu. You've got a Franco Serra Barbera d'Alba and a Maggiolo Chianti Classico holding down the reds, a Sella Antica red blend for people who don't want to think too hard, and a Franco Serra Gavi plus a Torresella Pinot Grigio covering the whites. The Lago Cerqueira Vinho Verde is the lone outlier β Portugal sneaking into the party β and it earns its spot. What's missing is any depth beyond entry-level, but for a casual pizza spot, these are genuinely good picks rather than generic filler.
Six of seven labels are available by the glass, which is the right ratio. Glass pours run $9β$10, which is honest money for a neighborhood restaurant. No indication of a rotating program, but when your list is this focused, you don't need one β just keep the pours consistent.
Franco Serra Barbera d'Alba β $36/bottle
Barbera is one of the most food-friendly grapes on the planet β high acid, low tannin, made for tomato sauce. At $36 a bottle, this is a genuinely fair price for a Piedmontese red that belongs on a pizza table.
Lago Cerqueira Vinho Verde
Nobody orders Vinho Verde at a pizza place, and that's a shame. It's bright, slightly fizzy, low-alcohol, and crushable β the perfect pizza wine that most people walk right past chasing the Chianti.
Santa Margherita Prosecco
Santa Margherita Prosecco at $22 for a half-bottle is a brand-name premium you're paying for familiarity, not quality. The Torresella Prosecco gets you the same bubbles for less ego.
Maggiolo Chianti Classico + Pizza
Chianti Classico and pizza is the original combo for a reason β Sangiovese's bright acidity cuts through the cheese and lifts the tomato sauce instead of fighting it. Order the bottle, not the glass.
Sunday β All wines, mimosas, and sangria are half price on Sundays β bottles, glasses, and carafes included. Also $2 off during happy hour.
π² The Bottom Line
Valentino's isn't trying to be a wine bar, and it doesn't need to be. A tight, Italy-focused list at fair prices with a Sunday half-price program is more than most pizza spots bother with β and enough to make us actually enjoy the wine alongside the pie.

Pies & Pints is here for the pizza and the pints β the wine list is functional at best and overpriced at worst. Order a beer, or grab the Wyclyff sparkling and move on.

54th Street is a perfectly fine place to eat a burger and drink a cold beer β the wine list is just there because it has to be. If you're set on wine, stick to the Gruet or the Chenin Blanc and let everyone else order the drafts.

Come to La Fiamma for the wood-fired pizza and the vibe β both are worth it. Come for the wine and you'll be disappointed. Order a cocktail or a beer and revisit when they decide the list deserves the same care as the kitchen.

Mellow Mushroom Old Shell Road is not a wine destination β it's a pizza spot that happens to have wine β and on most nights that's exactly fine. Show up on a Wednesday, grab a Josh Cab at half-price, and put your energy into the pizza.

Spin! Pizza is a perfectly fine place to eat pizza; the wine list is an afterthought that exists because restaurants need wine lists. Come on a Monday, order a bottle of Gnarly Head at half-price, and make peace with what this is.
