You walk in expecting a typical Texas wine bar and get hit with a focused, almost curatorial South African selection that has no business being this deep in San Marcos. Twelve labels sounds thin until you realize almost half of them are from Alheit Vineyards alone — one of the most critically lauded producers on the planet. This place has a point of view, and it commits.

The list is essentially a love letter to the Cape Winelands, anchored by five distinct Alheit Vineyards Chenin Blancs — Cartology, Fire By Night, Hemelrand Vine Garden, Magnetic North, and Nautical Dawn. Each Alheit expression pulls from different terroir and vineyard age, making this less a wine list and more a single-producer master class. Alvi's Drift fills in the mid-range with their standard Chenin Blanc, a 221 Range Chenin, a Viognier, and a Chardonnay/Viognier/Chenin blend that sounds chaotic but probably isn't. Babylonstoren rounds things out with a Chenin Blanc, a Mourvèdre Rosé, and their Babel red blend — giving you just enough range to avoid feeling like you're trapped in one grape variety all night. Red wine drinkers and anyone looking outside South Africa will feel underserved, but that's clearly the point.
