Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Thunder Bay Grille reads exactly like the room looks — comfortable, familiar, and not trying to challenge anyone. You'll recognize every name on here from a grocery store end cap, which is either reassuring or deflating depending on what you came for. It does the job for a steakhouse crowd that wants Rombauer with their ribeye, and honestly, there's nothing wrong with that.
The list lands squarely in California-and-friends territory, with a Pacific Northwest cameo and a token New Zealand rep in Kim Crawford. You're looking at 30 to 50 bottles built around brands that sell themselves — Meiomi, Josh Cellars, Rombauer — which means zero discovery but maximum reliability. There's no Old World presence to speak of, no natural wine curiosity, and no regional Illinois producers making an appearance. If you showed up hoping to find a Willamette Valley Pinot from a small producer or even a solid Argentine Malbec, you'll leave disappointed.
Ten to sixteen pours by the glass is a decent count for a casual steakhouse, and the usual suspects are all accounted for. Expect Meiomi Pinot Noir and Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc to anchor the list — workhorses that move fast and don't require any explanation. Rotation appears minimal; this is a set-it-and-forget-it program that refreshes when a label runs out, not when the seasons change.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc — $10
It's widely available and not exciting, but as a glass pour at a steakhouse it's crisp, clean, and priced fairly enough to make it the least painful option on the list — especially alongside the seafood platters.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
Broadly dismissed as a supermarket Pinot, and fair enough — but at a Cajun-leaning steakhouse with jambalaya on the menu, that soft, slightly sweet, berry-forward profile actually plays better than a bolder Cab would. Don't overthink it.
Rombauer Chardonnay
Rombauer at retail runs $35–$40. At a restaurant with steep markups, you're likely paying $65–$80 for a wine that's already polarizing and widely available. The vanilla-butter bomb routine gets old fast, and you can find it cheaper on the way home.
Meiomi Pinot Noir + Cajun Pasta
The spice in the Cajun pasta needs something that won't fight back. Meiomi's low tannins and fruity profile cool the heat without competing with it — the rare case where a soft, commercial Pinot is actually the right call.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Thunder Bay Grille is a reliable dinner out, not a wine destination — the list is built for comfort, not curiosity. If you're in Rockford and want a solid steak with a recognizable glass of red, you won't leave unhappy, but don't expect any revelations.
East State Street / Perryville corridor · Rockford · Contemporary American, upscale casual
Crave is a solid neighborhood restaurant with a wine list that plays it safe and charges accordingly — you won't drink badly here, but you'll pay for the comfort of familiarity. Send a friend if they want a reliable Cab with their steak; don't send them if they're hunting for something interesting.

Ciao Bella isn't going to blow any minds with its wine program, but it's honest, fairly priced, and the Wine Down Wednesday deal on bottles over $40 is legitimately one of the better weekly wine promos in the area. Show up on a Wednesday, order something Italian, and you'll leave happy.

Garrett's wine list is exactly what it needs to be for a casual upscale spot next to a driving range — familiar, drinkable, and mostly harmless. Just go in knowing you're paying for comfort and convenience, not discovery.

Giovanni's is the wine list equivalent of finding a great record collection in your uncle's basement — unexpected, occasionally overpriced, but with enough genuinely special bottles that you have to respect the effort. If you're in Rockford and care about what's in your glass, this is where you go.

SALT. is doing something genuinely surprising for its market — a tight, Old World-leaning wine list in a cocktail bar where most places would just slap on a Meiomi and call it a day. If you're in Rockford and you care about what's in your glass, this is your spot.

Hope & Anchor isn't a wine destination and it's not trying to be — but the prices are fair, the glass program covers all nine bottles, and there's a Riesling hiding in there for the curious. Come for the pint, stay for the shepherd's pie, and don't overthink the wine list.
