You don't expect to walk into a hotel dining room on a Big Ten campus and find a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence list staring back at you — but here we are. The Dining Room at The Nittany Lion Inn plays it formal and serious, and the wine program backs that up. It's a genuine surprise in a town better known for tailgates than terroir.
The Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence designation means this list clears 500+ selections across multiple regions — classic European appellations and major New World players both represented. The anchor bottles skew California-heavy on the recognizable end: Caymus and Stag's Leap Cab, Rombauer Chard, Jordan from Alexander Valley. That's a crowd-pleasing core, but the depth behind it is what earns the award, and that depth is real. The gap here is that the flagship pours lean toward safe, well-marketed labels rather than the more interesting regional producers that a list this size could showcase.
With 20–35 pours by the glass, this is one of the stronger BTG programs you'll find outside a dedicated wine bar in central Pennsylvania. The range gives you genuine options across white, red, and presumably sparkling categories. Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling makes a smart, food-friendly appearance on the glass list — that's a good sign the program isn't just defaulting to big Cabs and butter bombs.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling (Columbia Valley) — null
Pricing not confirmed in our research, but Columbia Valley Riesling from Ste. Michelle is reliably one of the best QPR whites in any restaurant context. At a list that trends $$$$, this bottle typically prices out as the most accessible entry point without sacrificing quality — and it actually has the versatility to work across much of the menu.
Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling (Columbia Valley)
Most tables in a room like this go straight for the Napa Cab or the Rombauer. The Riesling sits quietly on the list, undersold and underordered — which is a shame, because it's the most food-forward, versatile wine on the confirmed roster. Off-dry, crisp, and genuinely interesting next to anything with richness or spice.
Rombauer Chardonnay (Carneros)
Rombauer is good wine. But it's also one of the most aggressively marked-up bottles in American fine dining — restaurants know people will pay for the name, so they do. At a $$$–$$$$ price point in a hotel dining room, you're likely paying a significant premium over retail for something you could find at your local wine shop. The list at this size has better options.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon (Alexander Valley) + Multi-course wine dinner main course
Jordan Cab is built for the table — it's structured but not a bruiser, with enough elegance to carry through a formal multi-course format without steamrolling everything in front of it. Given that The Dining Room runs wine dinner events (the Portugal dinner being a documented example), the Jordan makes the most sense as an anchor red for the kind of serious sit-down meal this room is designed for.
🎲 The Bottom Line
The Dining Room at The Nittany Lion Inn is genuinely one of the more surprising wine destinations in Pennsylvania — the program punches well above its zip code and the staff clearly takes it seriously. The markups are hotel-dining-room real, so go in with eyes open, but if you're on campus and you want a proper wine experience, this is the only answer.
