The wine list at American Ale House is longer than you'd expect walking into a gastropub in State College. Seventy-four labels is a real number — not a token effort — though don't come in expecting to discover anything that'll change your life. This is a list built for the table that wanted wine while everyone else ordered craft beer.
The list leans heavily on reliable, widely distributed American brands — Kendall Jackson, Josh Cellars, Bogle, Woodbridge — with a few more interesting picks scattered in. Rodney Strong's Chalk Hill Chardonnay is a step above the rest of the whites, and the Pessimist Red Blend and Smith & Hook Cabernet show someone was at least paying attention when placing orders. The real standout is the Graham's Port trio — 10, 20, and 30 Year Tawnies — which is a genuinely thoughtful addition for a place that probably moves more IPAs than anything in a wine glass. There are no real Old World options to speak of and the Champagne on offer is J Roget, which tells you everything you need to know about the upper ceiling here.
Seventeen by-the-glass options is generous for a gastropub and covers all the bases — whites, rosé, sparkling, reds, and Port. Glass prices run from $7 to $25, with the Port selections anchoring the top end. The selection doesn't rotate much, but the breadth means most tables will find something workable.
Rodney Strong Chalk Hill Chardonnay — $12/glass
Chalk Hill is a legitimate appellation in Sonoma, and Rodney Strong does it well. At $12 a glass in a college town pub, this is the overachiever on the list — real character for the price, no apologies needed.
Graham's 20 Year Tawny Port
Most people at a gastropub aren't thinking about Port, which is exactly why you should. Graham's 20 Year is a proper, complex Tawny at $18 a glass — nutty, dried fruit, a little caramel — and it's a genuinely special way to end a meal that nobody at your table will see coming.
J Roget Champagne
At $7 a glass this isn't technically robbery, but J Roget is a bulk sparkling wine that has no business anchoring a champagne category. If you want bubbles, you're better off skipping it entirely and putting that $7 toward a second glass of something that actually tastes like it came from a grape someone cared about.
Pessimist Red Blend + Burger
The Pessimist is a Paso Robles blend built around Petite Sirah — dark, fruit-forward, and big enough to hold its own against a char-griddled pub burger. It's the kind of pairing that doesn't require overthinking, which fits the room perfectly.
The Bottom Line
American Ale House isn't a wine destination, but it's a fair and functional wine list for what it is — a well-run gastropub in a college town. The Graham's Port lineup alone earns it a pass, and the glass prices won't leave you feeling taken.

Grace at Carnegie House is doing more than the average Happy Valley fine dining room bothers to do with wine — the Karthäuserhof, the Cahors, and the Tua Rita prove that — but the list is still too short and too safe to be a destination for wine lovers. Come for the food; order carefully and you'll drink well enough.

Barrel 21 is a distillery restaurant and the wine list knows its place — which is firmly in the backseat. Come here for the spirits, stay if you must for a J Lohr or the Trapiche Malbec, but don't expect anyone behind the bar to have an opinion about any of it.

Texas Roadhouse is not a wine destination and makes no pretense of being one — the food is the point, and the wine list is a legal obligation. Order a beer, enjoy the rolls, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that earned it.

The Butter Churn is doing something genuinely surprising for central Pennsylvania — a thoughtful, well-sourced wine list that goes beyond the expected and rewards the curious drinker. If you're anywhere near State College and care about what's in your glass, this deserves a visit.
