Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Tavern in the Square West Hartford reads like the top shelf at a grocery store — Josh Cellars, Kim Crawford, Meiomi, La Marca. If you've eaten at any casual American chain in the last decade, you've seen this exact lineup before. There's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing interesting about it either.
Twenty to thirty-five wines across California, New Zealand, Italy, and France sounds like range until you realize the producers are all mass-market commercial brands with serious distribution footprints. Josh Cellars Cab and Meiomi Pinot Noir are fine wines for what they are, but they're priced at a premium here for names you can buy at Target. There's no sense that anyone curated this list — it looks like a regional rep dropped off a sheet and the manager said yes to everything. The France and Italy presence is thin cover for a list that lives and dies in California.
Ten to sixteen by-the-glass options is a decent count for a tavern, and the spread covers the obvious bases — bubbly, white, red. But the rotation appears to be static; there's no evidence of seasonal swaps or anything that suggests someone is actively managing what's in the pour. You're getting the same glass in February that you were in August.
La Marca Prosecco — $9
At the low end of their glass pricing, La Marca is at least a recognizable, consistent Prosecco that won't surprise you in a bad way. It's the most honest ask on the list — light, easy, and priced where the damage stays manageable.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc
It's not exactly obscure, but in a room full of heavy California reds, a crisp New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is the most food-friendly wine on the list and one most sports-bar crowds overlook. With a flatbread or fish and chips, it actually does its job.
Josh Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon
Josh Cellars Cab retails for around $13-$15 a bottle. Whatever they're charging per glass here, the math doesn't work in your favor. It's a perfectly drinkable commercial wine you can crack at home for a fraction of the markup — no reason to pay tavern prices for it.
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc + Fish and Chips
The bright acidity and citrus cut of the Kim Crawford does what a squeeze of lemon does for fried fish — it lifts the whole thing. It's the one pairing on this menu where the wine actually earns its place on the table.
❌ The Bottom Line
Tavern in the Square West Hartford is a perfectly decent place to watch a game and eat a burger, but the wine list is purely functional — familiar brands, steep markups, and zero curation. Stick to draft beer or a cocktail unless a glass of Prosecco is all you need.
West Hartford Center · Hartford · Upscale American Seafood and Raw Bar
Max's Oyster Bar is exactly the kind of reliable wine program a seafood-focused restaurant should have — thoughtfully built around what's on the plate, staffed by people who can guide you through it. The markup keeps it from being exceptional, but if you stick to the Old World whites, you'll drink very well.
