Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Scales & Shells is not trying to impress you β and that's oddly refreshing. It's compact, unpretentious, and matches the room: casual, coastal, no-nonsense. But flip to the dessert and after-dinner section and something genuinely interesting happens.
The main bottle list runs somewhere between 50 and 80 selections with a predictable lean toward Italian and Iberian producers that complement the kitchen's seafood-forward, Italian-influenced menu. Nothing groundbreaking in the dinner wine section β it's workmanlike and gets the job done. Where Scales & Shells earns its stripes is in the after-dinner program: Lustau Fino, Lustau Amontillado, and Lustau East India Solera sit alongside a 2008 Fonseca LBV port, Quinta do Noval 10yr Tawny, and Taylor Fladgate 20yr Tawny. That's a legitimately well-curated fortified lineup for a neighborhood seafood spot in Newport. The 2014 Marenco 'Strev' Moscato d'Asti and 2009 Fattoria del Cerro Vin Santo round out the dessert wine options with real intention.
The BTG program runs 8 to 14 options β decent count for a spot this size, though the selection skews conservative and there's no evidence of active rotation. It reads more like a static list than a living, breathing program, but the pours are reportedly fair and the staff will steer you without too much drama.
Lustau Fino β null
Fino sherry with raw oysters is one of the great underrated combos in dining, and Lustau is a benchmark producer. Finding it on a Newport seafood list is a genuine score β order it cold with whatever's coming off the raw bar.
2009 Fattoria del Cerro Vin Santo
Most people glance past Vin Santo on a dessert menu assuming it's just for biscotti dipping. This one from Fattoria del Cerro β a serious Tuscan producer β is the real thing: amber, oxidative, complex. It's the kind of pour that ends a seafood dinner on a genuinely memorable note.
Lustau East India Solera
Not a bad wine by any stretch β Lustau makes it well. But if you're already ordering from the fortified section, the Fino or Amontillado will work harder against the food. The East India Solera is sweeter and heavier, and it can overwhelm a seafood-forward meal. Save it for a different context.
Lustau Amontillado + Oysters from the raw bar
Amontillado has that dry, nutty, saline backbone that cuts right through the brininess of a fresh oyster. It's a classic combination that most people never try because they're too busy reaching for a Muscadet. Order both. You can thank us later.
π² The Bottom Line
Scales & Shells isn't a wine destination β until you hit the after-dinner list, where a thoughtfully assembled fortified and dessert wine program punches well above what you'd expect from a casual Thames Street seafood joint. Come for the raw bar, stay for the Lustau.

Brix isn't trying to be a destination wine list β it's trying to be a great ambassador for one vineyard's work, and it mostly succeeds. Send your curious friends here; send your Burgundy obsessives somewhere else.

TSK is quietly one of the better wine lists in Newport, which is a town that doesn't exactly set a high bar β but this one would hold its own in most cities. If you're eating farm-to-table food and want a bottle that actually matches the kitchen's ethos, this is your spot.

Mamma Luisa isn't a wine destination, but it's a solid, honest Italian list that does right by the food coming out of the kitchen. Send a friend here for a bottle of Barbera and a bowl of homemade pasta and they'll thank you.

Vieste isn't a destination wine list, but it's a genuinely honest one β a small, region-focused selection that actually matches the food and the room. Send a friend here if they're curious about Southern Italian grapes and tired of the same ten wines on every Newport menu.

Stoneacre Garden punches above its weight for a patio bar on the Newport waterfront β it's not a destination wine list, but it's a thoughtful one built around the food, and that's rarer than it should be. If you're here for oysters and small plates, you'll drink well without overthinking it.

The Lobster Bar isn't a wine destination, but it's a perfectly competent list for what the restaurant is β a casual waterfront spot where the lobster is the star. Order the Sancerre, eat the oysters, watch the boats.
