Wingman Metrics
The list at Sage Creek Grille is short — 21 labels — and it doesn't try to hide what it is: a comfortable, crowd-friendly lineup built for people who want a glass of something familiar with their dinner in Custer, South Dakota. There's no pretense here, which is actually kind of refreshing. This is wine as hospitality, not performance.
California leads the charge, with Caymus, DAOU, 1000 Stories, and Dry Creek representing the state across multiple styles. Oregon gets a nod via Elouan Pinot Noir and Washington shows up with Seven Hills Merlot, giving the list a loose Pacific Coast backbone. Italy earns a spot with Gabbiano Chianti Classico and Ca'Bolani Pinot Grigio, while France contributes La Vieille Ferme Rosé — a reliable crowd-pleaser if there ever was one. What's missing is depth: no aged bottles, no obscure regions, no producers that would make a wine-focused traveler detour. But for the Black Hills, this list covers its bases.
Fifteen of the 21 bottles pour by the glass, which is a genuinely strong ratio and the clearest sign that this place wants you drinking, not deliberating. Prices run $9–$13 a glass, which is honest money for the market. The range spans Albariño to Zinfandel, so you're not stuck choosing between Chardonnay and Cabernet all night.
DAOU 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon — $54/btl
DAOU Cab retails around $20–$25, so a 2–2.5x markup at a restaurant in Rapid City is more than fair. It's a well-made, fruit-forward Paso Robles Cab that drinks above its price point — and here it's the smartest bottle on the list.
Martin Codax Albariño
Most people at a steakhouse-adjacent New American spot are reaching for Cab or Chardonnay. The Martin Codax Albariño is a Rías Baixas classic — bright, saline, with real texture — and it's almost certainly the most interesting white on the list. Order it.
Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon
Caymus retails around $80–$85 and it's $80 here, so the math technically works out. But you're paying full freight for a wine that's been coasting on its reputation for years — overextracted, over-oaked, and over-hyped. The DAOU next to it drinks nearly as well for $26 less.
1000 Stories Bourbon-Barrel Aged Zinfandel + Bison or beef entrée
A bourbon-barrel aged Zin from the same region that pioneered the style was practically built for red meat. The smoky, jammy, slightly boozy profile of 1000 Stories locks in with charred beef or bison in a way that a generic Cab just won't.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Sage Creek Grille isn't trying to be a wine destination, and it doesn't need to be — it's doing its job for its market, with fair prices and a by-the-glass program that actually gives you options. If you're exploring the Black Hills and want a solid glass with your dinner, you won't leave disappointed.
North Rapid City · Rapid City · Hotel Lounge
Timbers Lounge is a place to have a drink after a long drive to Mount Rushmore, not a destination for wine. Order a cocktail or a beer and save your wine energy for somewhere that's put in the work.

Central Rapid City · Rapid City · Mexican
Mi Mexico is not a wine destination, and it doesn't pretend to be — order a margarita, enjoy your meal, and don't expect the wine list to surprise you. If you absolutely must have wine with your tacos, the Sangria is $6.25 and nobody will judge you.

East Rapid City · Rapid City · Steakhouse
LongHorn Rapid City is exactly what it is — a reliable chain steakhouse with a wine list that was built by committee and hasn't changed much since. If you're here for the steak, you'll be fine; just aim for the Joel Gott and don't expect the staff to talk you through it.

There is no version of this wine list that warrants a special trip or even a deliberate order — it's a functional corporate program designed to move bottles, not to impress. If you're at Outback for the steak, grab the Alamos Malbec and call it a night; if wine actually matters to you, this is a cocktail dinner.

This is a wine list that exists purely because restaurants are expected to have one. Don't come to Applebee's for wine — but if you're already here and you need a glass, the Mondavi Cab won't embarrass you.

Red Lobster Rapid City's wine list exists to check a box, not to enhance your meal. Order the Riesling if you must, but honestly, a cocktail or a cold draft will serve you better here.

Tally's Silver Spoon shouldn't have a wine list this considered, and that's the whole point. If you're in Rapid City and you want a real dinner with a glass of wine that doesn't insult you, this is the move.

Top Hat isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — and for a live music bar in Missoula, the list is fairer and more considered than it needs to be. Grab the Rioja, catch the show, and don't overthink it.

Yountville · Napa · New American
Lucy is a well-run hotel wine program that takes itself seriously — proper glassware, a sommelier who shows up, and a California list with genuine depth. The markups are Napa-level steep, but you're in Yountville; nobody's coming here expecting Brooklyn prices.
