The list at CIRCA Clarendon is compact and approachable — 20 or so labels, all by the glass, priced in a tight $17–$22 band that won't make you wince when you order a second round. It's clearly built for the after-work crowd and weekend brunchers, not for anyone hunting obscure Jura pours. That said, there's more going on here than the typical neighborhood spot if you know where to look.
The whites pull from a solid spread of regions — Austrian Grüner from Grooner, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from both Vavasour and Yealands, a South African Chenin Blanc from M.A.N., and a Galician Albariño from Abadia de San Campio. That's a surprisingly international lineup for a restaurant in Clarendon. The reds are where things get more predictable: Banshee Pinot, Portillo Malbec, High Heaven Cab, and the Prisoner's Unshackled blend — all recognizable names that sell themselves. The Côte Mas Rhône blend is the one left-of-center red in the bunch. Bubbles cover the basics with Poema Cava, Ruffino Prosecco, and a Mumm Brut Rosé for anyone feeling fancy.
Every single wine on the list is available by the glass, which is the real headline here — no bottle minimums, no awkward negotiations. At $17–$22 a pour, you're not getting gouged, and the range is wide enough to spend a full evening working through different styles without repeating yourself. The rotation doesn't appear to change much, but when the baseline is this functional, that's a minor complaint.
M.A.N. Chenin Blanc — $17
Chenin Blanc from South Africa is criminally underrated, and M.A.N. delivers bright stone fruit and crisp acidity at the lowest price point on the list. This is the move.
Côte Mas Rhône Blend
Everyone at the table is ordering the Malbec or the Unshackled, and meanwhile this southern French Rhône blend is sitting there at $17 being completely ignored. It's earthy, it's got structure, and it drinks above its station.
Prisoner Wine Co. - Unshackled Red Blend
At $22 it's the priciest red on the list, and Unshackled is the Prisoner's budget line — you're paying for brand recognition, not what's in the glass. The Côte Mas at $17 drinks better.
Abadia de San Campio Albariño + Fish tacos or any seafood appetizer on the menu
Albariño and seafood is a classic Atlantic coast pairing for a reason — the wine's saline edge and citrus zip cut through anything from the ocean. The Abadia de San Campio is a reliable producer and at $20 it's not a stretch.
The Bottom Line
CIRCA Clarendon isn't trying to be a wine destination and doesn't pretend otherwise — but the all-BTG format, fair prices, and a few genuinely interesting whites make it a solid call when you want wine that works without overthinking it. Send a friend here, just steer them away from the Unshackled.
