Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Outback Morgantown is exactly what you'd expect from a chain steakhouse in a strip mall off Venture Drive — a laminated page of household names you've seen at every grocery store checkout line. There's nothing here that suggests anyone spent more than 20 minutes assembling this program. It's wine as an afterthought, designed to move bottles, not excite anyone.
The list leans almost entirely on California commercial brands — J. Lohr, Sutter Home, Red Diamond, Mirassou — with La Marca Prosecco as the token Italian entry and some vague chain-level references to Australian Shiraz and French Bordeaux blends that may or may not actually show up on your server's printed sheet. There's no real regional exploration here, no independent producers, and nothing that would make a wine-curious diner lean forward. What you get is a greatest hits of supermarket shelves, assembled for familiarity rather than quality. The ceiling is low and the floor isn't much higher.
The by-the-glass program is as generic as it gets — House Red, House White, and a handful of varietal references (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Merlot) that aren't tied to specific producers on the menu. Prosecco is available by the glass, which is essentially La Marca in disguise. At $6–$25 a glass depending on what you order, you're paying restaurant prices for wine that retails for $10–$15 a bottle.
J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon — $40–$50 (bottle, estimated)
J. Lohr Seven Oaks is a legitimate, food-friendly Cab from Paso Robles that retails around $16–$18. At a steakhouse with a ribeye on the table, it's the most defensible bottle on this list — you at least know what you're getting and it'll hold up to red meat.
La Marca Prosecco
Nobody comes to Outback for Prosecco, but starting with a cold glass before the Bloomin' Onion lands is genuinely not a bad move. It's a crowd-pleasing brand, it's refreshing, and it costs less than most cocktails here. The bar is low, but La Marca clears it.
Sutter Home White Zinfandel
A bottle of Sutter Home White Zin on a restaurant menu in 2025 is a warning sign, not a wine recommendation. It retails for under $8 at any grocery store in Morgantown. Whatever they're charging you here, it isn't worth it.
J. Lohr Estates Los Osos Merlot + Victoria's Filet Mignon
The Los Osos Merlot is soft, fruit-forward, and low on aggressive tannins — which makes it a better match for the lean, tender filet than a heavy Cab would be. It's not a revelation, but it's the most sensible pairing on a limited list.
The Bottom Line
The wine program at Outback Morgantown exists to fill a line on the menu, not to enhance your dinner. Order the steak, enjoy the Bloomin' Onion, and if you must drink wine, grab the J. Lohr Cab and make peace with it.
