Walk into Local Yocal and the wine list is the last thing on your mind — the smell of smoked meat is doing all the talking. But flip open that menu and you'll find a compact 12-bottle list that actually shows some effort, with a German Riesling and an Oregon Pinot sitting alongside the expected California crowd-pleasers. It's not trying to be a wine bar. It knows what it is.
Twelve labels, all poured by the glass, which is either democratic or a sign the cellar isn't exactly deep — probably both. California dominates, as you'd expect, but there are genuine bright spots: a Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc (a grape almost nobody lists anymore), a Gunderloch Riesling from Rheinhessen, and an Amadio GSM from Australia's Barossa. The reds lean toward steak-friendly weight — Omen Cab, Blazon Merlot, A to Z Pinot Noir — which makes sense given the menu. Gaps are obvious: no Zinfandel for a BBQ joint feels like a real miss, and the list could use a Tempranillo or two to round out the Old World presence.
Every bottle on the list is also poured by the glass, ranging from $8 to $16, which makes this genuinely approachable for a table that can't agree on a bottle. The glass prices are reasonable on the surface, but the bottle markups run steep — 275% to 350% on some labels — so ordering by the glass actually softens the blow here. No rotating program, no half-price nights; what you see is what you get, every night.
Dry Creek Vineyard Chenin Blanc — $8/glass
Dry Creek Vineyard is a serious, legacy California producer, and their Chenin Blanc is criminally underrated. At the low end of the glass pour price, this is the smartest order on the list — especially alongside anything with smoke or spice.
Gunderloch Riesling
Most people at a Texas BBQ joint are reaching for a Cab. Don't. Gunderloch is a respected Rheinhessen estate and their Riesling's acidity and slight sweetness make it a natural foil for fatty, smoky meat. It's the most interesting bottle on this list and probably the least ordered.
Frey Organic Red Blend
The 'organic' label does a lot of heavy lifting here and the markup doesn't justify the juice. At a table full of steaks and BBQ, this blend isn't pulling its weight compared to the Omen Cab or the Amadio GSM sitting right next to it on the list.
Amadio GSM Red Blend + Specialty Steaks
A Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre blend from the Barossa has the dark fruit and peppery backbone to stand up to a serious sear without overpowering the char. It's built for exactly this moment.
✔️ The Bottom Line
Local Yocal isn't here to win wine awards and it doesn't pretend to be — but a Dry Creek Chenin Blanc and a German Riesling on a BBQ list in McKinney is worth a nod. The markups sting a little, but order smart and you'll drink just fine alongside that brisket.

BJ's McKinney is a beer destination with a wine list that exists mostly as a formality — the Wednesday half-price deal is the only reason to engage with it seriously. Come for the craft beer and the Pazookie; the wine is just along for the ride.

P.F. Chang's wine list won't win any awards, but it's doing exactly what it needs to do for a busy suburban dinner crowd. Don't come here for a wine experience — but don't write it off either, especially if you know what to order.

Saltgrass McKinney is a reliable spot for a Texas-style steak, but the wine list is clearly not why anyone is driving out here. Unless you're sticking to the J. Lohr Pinot or talking someone into splitting the Hampton Water, you're better off ordering a cocktail and calling it a night.

Blue Goose is a perfectly fun Tex-Mex night out — just don't come here for the wine. Order a margarita, eat the tamales, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that returns the favor.

Durkin's is a legitimately good pizza spot that happens to have a wine list in the same way a convenience store has a wine list — it's there, it's functional, and nobody's proud of it. Come for the pies, order the beer, and if you must have wine, go Louis Martini and don't overthink it.

Harry's is a reliable neighborhood anchor for McKinney — the kind of place you bring out-of-town family without stressing about it. The wine list won't blow anyone's mind, but it won't embarrass you either; just steer clear of the grocery-store staples and lean toward the upper end of the bottle list.
