Italy in a bottle, suburban comfort in a glass

Wingman Metrics
The wine list at La Sorella reads exactly like you'd expect from a white-tablecloth Italian trattoria in downtown Naperville — tidy, predictable, and unambiguously Italian. It's not trying to impress anyone who knows wine deeply, but it's not embarrassing itself either. Think of it as a well-pressed suit: nothing adventurous, but you won't show up underdressed.
The list leans hard on the Italian classics — Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino anchor the reds, while Alto Adige Pinot Grigio holds down the whites with at least some regional credibility. The Super Tuscan section gets the most headline attention, with Antinori's Tignanello and Sassicaia making appearances that will impress a table of casual wine drinkers. Chianti Classico Riserva fills the middle ground sensibly. What's missing is any real exploration — no Etna, no Campania, no orange wine, no sense that anyone's paying attention to what's exciting in Italian wine right now.
Twelve to eighteen options by the glass covers the bases without any real excitement — expect the usual suspects across Pinot Grigio, Chianti, and a couple of token reds. Prices run $10–$18 a pour, which is reasonable for the neighborhood and the setting. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority here; this list has the energy of something that gets updated annually, not seasonally.
Chianti Classico Riserva — $45
A solid Chianti Classico Riserva in the $40–$50 bottle range is where this list earns its keep. You're getting Sangiovese with actual structure and some age on it — real wine, reasonable price, and it belongs at this table.
Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige
Most people gloss over white wine at a place like this, but Alto Adige Pinot Grigio is genuinely different from the watery Santa Margherita stuff. It's crisp, mineral-driven, and worth ordering — especially if you're starting with something light while the table figures out the red.
Sassicaia
Sassicaia on a restaurant list at this price tier is almost always a markup trap, and there's no reason to think La Sorella bucks that trend. You can find it retail for significantly less, and the markup here likely pushes it into 'special occasion theater' territory rather than genuine value. Save it for a wine shop.
Barolo + Saltimbocca di vitello
Barolo's tannin and tar cut right through the richness of the veal and sage butter in the Saltimbocca, and the wine's dried cherry character plays off the prosciutto without competing with it. It's a classic Italian pairing for a reason.
✔️ The Bottom Line
La Sorella di Francesca is a reliable Italian wine program for a reliable Italian dinner — you'll drink well enough, especially if you stick to the Sangiovese-based bottles. Just don't come expecting to be surprised, and watch the markups on the prestige bottles.
Downtown Naperville · Naperville · American pub / burgers
Jackson Avenue Pub is not a wine destination, but Wine Wednesdays at half-price make it a legitimately smart stop if you're already there for a burger and a game. Come for the beer, stay for the deal.

Freedom Commons / I-88 Corridor · Naperville · Seafood and Steakhouse
Hugo's Naperville is a reliable, well-run steakhouse wine program that will not let you down and will not excite you. Come for the prime beef and oysters, order the Jordan or the Duckhorn, and don't look too hard at the markup on the Pinot Grigio.

Fat Rosie's is a genuinely fun taco and tequila spot that has no business being reviewed for its wine — and that's kind of the point. If your table wants wine, order cocktails instead and save everyone the disappointment.

Vasili's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but the Greek-focused list has enough genuine producers and interesting grapes to reward curious drinkers — especially on Tuesdays when the bottles go half-price. Watch the markups on the Agiorgitiko, lean into the northern Greek reds and the Malagousia, and you'll eat and drink very well along that riverwalk.

Lou Malnati's is a legitimately iconic pizza destination — but the wine list is an afterthought, marked up on cheap bottles with zero curation or ambition. Come for the deep dish, drink beer, and save the wine night for somewhere that cares.

Che Figata is the rare suburban hotel restaurant with a wine list worth actually engaging with — Italian-focused, sommelier-guided, and broad enough to reward exploration. The markups sting on a few bottles, but the range and program depth make this the best wine bet in Naperville's CityGate orbit.
