Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Jackie Rey's is named after someone called Angie, which immediately tells you this wasn't assembled by committee — someone with taste put this together. At 24 labels, it's compact, but the selections signal actual thought rather than a distributor's default drop. You're in Hilo, not Napa, and the list knows that.
The list is organized into sensible categories — sparkling, refreshing whites, Chardonnay, reds, and a section they call Interesting Reds — and that last bucket is doing the most work. You've got a New Zealand Escarpment Pinot Noir sitting next to Oregon's Roco Gravel Road and California's Failla, which is a quietly impressive Pinot trifecta for a casual seafood spot. The white game is respectable too: Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre and Argiolas Vermentino give the list some Old World credibility alongside the expected Rombauer and Kistler Chardonnays. Gaps exist — no rosé, no sparkling by the glass noted, thin on anything south of France or outside the California-Europe axis — but for a mid-sized restaurant in Hilo, this punches well above its weight.
By-the-glass specifics aren't published, which is a real gap — if you're a solo diner or someone who wants to explore without committing to a bottle, you're going in a little blind. Based on the bottle list, we'd hope Angie is pouring the Roco Gravel Road Pinot and the Morgan Metallico Chardonnay by the glass, since both are priced right for it. Worth asking your server directly before defaulting to whatever's closest to the ice bucket.
Argiolas Vermentino — $47
Sardinian Vermentino at $47 in a Hawaii seafood restaurant is a legitimately great call. Crisp, saline, herby — it's built for grilled fish and island air. This is the kind of bottle that would run $18-22 retail, making the markup reasonable and the match to the menu near-perfect.
Escarpment Pinot Noir
Most people scanning this list will default to the Failla or Foxen because California is familiar. But Escarpment is one of New Zealand's benchmark Pinot producers out of Martinborough, and at $68 it's the most interesting red on the list that nobody at the table will recognize — which is exactly why you should order it.
Kistler Les Noisetiers Chardonnay
Kistler is excellent wine, no argument there. But at $130 you're paying peak Sonoma Coast prestige pricing in a casual Hilo restaurant, and that's a tough pill. The Stags' Leap Chardonnay at $54 drinks in a similar lane for less than half the price. Save the Kistler for somewhere with the cellar program and glassware to back it up.
Henri Bourgeois Les Baronnes Sancerre + Fresh grilled fish
Sancerre and grilled seafood is a classic for a reason — Loire Sauvignon Blanc brings citrus and minerality that cuts through any char or butter without overwhelming delicate fish. Henri Bourgeois is one of the appellation's most consistent producers, and at $63 this is a bottle worth the splurge at a coastal seafood spot.
The Bottom Line
Jackie Rey's wine list is a genuine surprise for a neighborhood seafood joint in Hilo — thoughtful picks, fair prices, and enough range to keep a wine-curious table happy. We'd send a friend here without hesitation, just tell them to ask about the glass pours before they sit down.

Hilo Bay Cafe isn't a destination wine list, but it's a genuinely thoughtful one for where it sits — geographically and price-wise. Send a friend here if they want a solid pour with their fish without getting taken for a ride.

For a 16-bottle list in a small Hawaiian city, Lehua is doing more than most — thoughtful picks, fair prices, and a Sancerre that punches well above its geographic weight. If you're eating in Hilo and you care about drinking well, this is your spot.

Nanea Lounge is a perfectly fine place to have a drink while you watch the sun go down over Hilo Bay — but the wine list is pure hotel autopilot, and nobody here is going to help you drink better. Order a mai tai and save the wine for somewhere that cares.

Cafe Pesto isn't a wine destination, but it's a fair one — reasonable prices, an approachable list, and enough to keep the table happy while you focus on the view and the pizza. Send a friend here for the food and tell them to keep it simple on the wine.
