The wine list at Hilo Bay Cafe doesn't try to be something it's not — and honestly, that's refreshing. Forty-five labels in a casual bayfront spot on the Big Island is a decent showing, and the layout signals that someone actually thought about what their guests might want to drink. It's not a deep cellar, but it's not a laminated sheet with three reds either.
The list leans heavily into crowd-friendly California producers — Cakebread, Ferrari-Carano, Neyers — with a few smart international detours that punch above their weight. The Sauvignon Blanc section alone covers Marlborough, Sonoma, the Loire, and even a local Hawaiian rosé nod with the Maui Lokelani. What's genuinely impressive is the dessert wine game: Royal Tokaji Aszu, Chateau Gravas Sauternes, Chambers Muscat, and two ports by the glass is not something you stumble into at a waterfront cafe in Hilo. The gaps are in red wine — only a single Cab Franc by the glass (Cosentino from Lodi) suggests the bottle list likely skews familiar and fruit-forward.
Eight by-the-glass options is a workable program, and whoever curated it clearly has a soft spot for dessert pours — four of the eight BTG slots are dessert or fortified wines, which is either visionary or slightly lopsided depending on your mood. The $8–$18 range is genuinely fair for Hawaii, where wine markups can get brutal fast. The Royal Tokaji Aszu at $18/glass is the most interesting pour on the menu and an easy yes.
Roederer Estate Brut | Mendocino, CA — $57
Roederer Estate is Anderson Valley's best-kept sparkling secret — made by the same family behind Cristal, it drinks well above its price point. At $57 a bottle in Hawaii, where sparkling wine often gets gouged, this is genuinely fair. Order it instead of the Veuve.
Royal Tokaji Aszu | Hungary
At $18 a glass, this is the most interesting pour on the list by a wide margin. Hungarian Tokaji Aszu is one of the world's great dessert wines — honeyed, complex, and nothing like the sugar-bomb you might expect. Most people walk past it and order another Chardonnay. Don't be most people.
Veuve Clicquot Brut | Champagne, FR
At $125 a bottle, you're paying almost entirely for the yellow label. Roederer Estate is three tables over on the same list, costs $57, and frankly drinks just as well in a casual bayfront setting. The Clicquot is fine — it's just a bad deal when a better option is right there.
Henri Bourgeois Sancerre | FR + Fresh local seafood
Sancerre and seafood is a classic pairing for a reason — the Loire's sharp, mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc cuts through brine and fat without overwhelming delicate fish. At a contemporary seafood spot on Hilo Bay, this is the obvious move, and Henri Bourgeois delivers the real deal at $60 a bottle.
The Bottom Line
Hilo Bay Cafe isn't a destination wine list, but it's a genuinely thoughtful one for where it sits — geographically and price-wise. Send a friend here if they want a solid pour with their fish without getting taken for a ride.

Temple Kitchen + Bar keeps things safe and recognizable, which is either reassuring or boring depending on your mood. If you're in Hilo and want a decent glass without any homework, you'll be fine — just don't come here expecting to discover anything.

For a 16-bottle list in a small Hawaiian city, Lehua is doing more than most — thoughtful picks, fair prices, and a Sancerre that punches well above its geographic weight. If you're eating in Hilo and you care about drinking well, this is your spot.

Nanea Lounge is a perfectly fine place to have a drink while you watch the sun go down over Hilo Bay — but the wine list is pure hotel autopilot, and nobody here is going to help you drink better. Order a mai tai and save the wine for somewhere that cares.
