Eleven bottles. That's the whole list. You open the menu expecting to find something interesting in Hilo — maybe a local producer, a quirky natural wine, anything — and instead you get a laminated shortlist that looks like it was approved by a hotel chain committee in 2017. The bay view is probably better than what's in the glass.
This is a greatest-hits reel from the grocery store wine aisle: Pebble Lane, Mark West, Hess, St. Francis. Safe, recognizable, inoffensive — and essentially no regional variety or adventurous picks whatsoever. The lone bright spot is the Römerhof Riesling Kabinett, which at least shows someone once glanced sideways at Europe. There's a Jean-Louis Blanc de Blancs for bubbles on a budget and Piper-Heidsieck if you want to feel like you're celebrating something, but the overall list reads like minimum viable wine program. No local Hawaiian producers, no natural wine, no old world depth — just the brands that move volume at hotel bars across America.
Ten of eleven bottles are available by the glass, which sounds generous until you realize the list is only eleven bottles deep. Pours run $8–$11, which is one of the few genuinely reasonable things happening here. The selection mirrors the bottle list exactly — no exclusive glass pours, no rotating options, no reason to get excited.
Römerhof Riesling Kabinett — $36
The only bottle on this list that requires any curiosity to order. A German Kabinett Riesling is light, off-dry, and food-friendly — and in a lineup of California cab clones, it's the closest thing to an actual wine pick.
Jean-Louis Blanc de Blancs
Most people at a hotel bar reach for the Prosecco or splurge on the Piper-Heidsieck. The Jean-Louis Blanc de Blancs gets ignored, but it's a legitimate all-Chardonnay sparkling wine that hits different — crisp, focused, and worth the $44.
Piper-Heidsieck Champagne
At $90 on a hotel bar list, you're paying a serious premium for a bottle you can find at retail for under $40. It's a fine Champagne, but the markup here is punishing. If you want bubbles, the Jean-Louis does the job at half the price.
Römerhof Riesling Kabinett + Fresh local seafood
Whatever comes off the local catch — fish tacos, grilled mahi, poke-adjacent plates — the Riesling's off-dry acidity and low alcohol cut through richness and complement anything from the ocean. It's the most Hawaii-appropriate bottle on a list that somehow forgot it's in Hawaii.
The Bottom Line
This is a wine list that exists because hotels have to have wine lists. If you're serious about what's in your glass, order a cocktail — the bartender probably cares more about that anyway.

WSW won't make any wine lists' most-wanted lists, but it prices honestly, pours generously, and doesn't embarrass itself in a category where hotel restaurants often do. If you're in Hilo and want a bottle of wine with your steak without getting gouged, this is a safe call.

Ponds Hilo has a setting that deserves a wine list to match, and this isn't it. Grab the Prosecco split, enjoy the view, and save the serious wine drinking for somewhere else.

Jackie Rey's wine list is a genuine surprise for a neighborhood seafood joint in Hilo — thoughtful picks, fair prices, and enough range to keep a wine-curious table happy. We'd send a friend here without hesitation, just tell them to ask about the glass pours before they sit down.
