The wine list here feels like an afterthought scribbled in the margins of a beer menu — which, honestly, it kind of is. You're in a craft brewery in State College, Pennsylvania, and the wine program exists to serve the people who showed up with someone who doesn't drink beer. It does that job, barely.
Every label on this list is a familiar face from the grocery store shelf: Bogle, Mark West, Sycamore Lane, Ferrari-Carano, Chateau Ste. Michelle. These aren't bad wines — they're just wines that require zero curation to assemble. There's no real regional story being told here, just a broad sweep of commercially safe California with a token nod to New Zealand via Whitehaven and Italy via La Marca Prosecco. The Bonanza by Caymus and Michael David Freakshow Red Blend show up like guests trying a little too hard at a party where nobody asked them to. No European bottles, no independents, no weird grapes — nothing that suggests someone with wine knowledge shaped this list.
The by-the-glass program is actually the best thing going here, with somewhere between 12 and 16 options depending on the day and what's rotating. That's a solid count for a brewpub, and it means wine drinkers at least have choices. The rotating secondary selections are a nice touch in theory, though without consistent documentation it's hard to know what you're walking into.
Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc — $14
Whitehaven is a legitimate wine from Marlborough — consistently clean, citrusy, and well-made. It's the one bottle on this list that rises above the brand-recognition game and actually delivers something worth drinking.
Daou Rosé
Daou makes a proper Paso Robles rosé that punches above its brewpub context. Most people ordering wine here will default to Chardonnay or Cab — the Daou Rosé is the smarter play, especially if you're eating anything off the wood-fired pizza menu.
Sycamore Lane Pinot Grigio
Sycamore Lane is bulk California wine dressed up with a label. It's the house white for a reason — low cost, low excitement, low everything. At $11 a glass it's still not a deal. Pass.
Bogle Zinfandel + Burger
Bogle Zinfandel is a big, jammy, slightly spicy red that has no problem standing up to a smash burger with all the toppings. It's not elegant, but it's not trying to be — and neither is the burger. They're a good match.
❌ The Bottom Line
Happy Valley Brewing Company is a beer destination with a wine list that exists out of obligation, not passion. If your table skips the beer, order the Whitehaven and move on — don't go chasing depth that isn't here.

Texas Roadhouse is not a wine destination and makes no pretense of being one — the food is the point, and the wine list is a legal obligation. Order a beer, enjoy the rolls, and save your wine curiosity for somewhere that earned it.

The Butter Churn is doing something genuinely surprising for central Pennsylvania — a thoughtful, well-sourced wine list that goes beyond the expected and rewards the curious drinker. If you're anywhere near State College and care about what's in your glass, this deserves a visit.

The Field's wine list is functional at best and forgettable at worst — it exists to serve people who want something other than a beer, not to make anyone excited about what's in their glass. Order the Hawstone Hollow out of regional solidarity, grab the Tilia Malbec with your burger, and let the cocktail menu do the heavy lifting the rest of the night.

Mamma Lucrezia's isn't a destination wine list, but the Wednesday half-price bottle deal changes the math considerably — suddenly that Joseph Phelps looks a lot more interesting. Show up any other night and manage expectations; show up Wednesday and order what you actually want.
