Grey Orchard

Eighteen bottles isn't a lot to work with, but Grey Orchard earns points for not defaulting to the lazy airport-lounge playbook. The list has actual shape to it — sparkling, whites, rosé, reds, and a short reserves section — which tells you someone thought about this. Whether that someone is still around to explain it is another question.

The list skews West Coast and plays it mostly accessible, with Erath and Cherry Pie handling Pinot Noir duties and a pair of As One Cru bottlings anchoring the upper end. What catches our eye is the RARA block — a Riesling, a Gewürztraminer, and a Melonade sitting in the reserves, priced between $65 and $75. That's a genuinely unusual move for Round Rock, Texas, and it suggests whoever built this list has some personality. The Casadei Mediterraneo GSM and a Barossa Valley GSM at opposite ends of the price spectrum ($25 vs. $56) give you a nice range to explore the same grape blend at different ambition levels. Gaps? No Malbec, no skin-contact wine, nothing Italian beyond the Pinot Grigio and Casadei — but for 18 labels, this is reasonably well-curated.

Fourteen of the eighteen bottles are available by the glass, which is a generous pour-to-bottle ratio and genuinely useful. Glass prices run $7 to $17, keeping the floor accessible without cheapening the top end. Rotation appears static — no chalk board specials or seasonal swaps in evidence — but when you can try the Gewürztraminer or the Fleur de Prairie Rosé by the glass, you're not really suffering.
