The wine list at Essie's isn't trying to impress you — and that's actually fine. It's a focused, approachable selection that matches the neighborhood-spot energy without embarrassing itself. At 20-35 bottles, it doesn't overpromise, and the $40–$80 bottle range keeps things accessible for a weeknight out in Poughkeepsie.
The list leans into New York State pride, which we respect — Wolffer Estate and Bedell Cellars are legitimate producers, not filler names. California and Southern Hemisphere fill out the rest without much ambition, and yes, Meiomi Pinot Noir is on here, which tells you they're covering their bases for the crowd rather than the convert. There are real gaps in Old World coverage, and if you're hunting for anything from Burgundy, Rioja, or the Rhône, you're in the wrong spot. What's here works for the food; what's missing won't matter to most of the room.
Eight to twelve pours by the glass at $12–$18 is a reasonable spread for a casual-upscale neighborhood restaurant, and the glass range tracks with the bottle list — New York, California, a little Southern Hemisphere. Don't expect a rotating program; the BTG menu looks more static than seasonal. What you see is what you get, but what you get isn't bad.
Bedell Cellars Merlot, North Fork of Long Island — $40–$50
North Fork Merlot from a serious producer at this price range is a genuine find. Bedell has been making credible Long Island reds for decades, and getting it at a neighborhood restaurant without a 4x markup is exactly the kind of thing we're here to flag.
Broadbent Vinho Verde, Portugal
Most people walk right past Vinho Verde on a list like this, but on a warm Hudson Valley evening with a plate of shrimp and grits in front of you, it earns its place hard. Low ABV, high acid, a little spritz — it's the sleeper pick nobody orders and everyone should.
Meiomi Pinot Noir, California
Meiomi is a fine bottle off a grocery store shelf. Here, you're paying restaurant markup on a mass-produced, heavily blended California Pinot that you could grab at Total Wine on the way home. With Bedell on the same list, there's no reason to go here.
Wolffer Estate Rosé, The Hamptons, New York + Fried Chicken
Wolffer's rosé has enough acidity and dry fruit character to cut through fried chicken's richness without getting lost next to the seasoning. It's also a New York wine at a New York restaurant, which feels like the right call. Order both, don't overthink it.

Essie's wine list is a solid supporting act to food that clearly leads the show — fair prices, a few legitimate producers, and enough range to keep most tables happy. We'd send a friend here for dinner without hesitation; just don't come expecting a deep cellar.
