Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Chicago Prime Italian arrives with the same confidence as the room itself — white tablecloths, a buzzing bar, and the kind of energy that says 'we take this seriously.' Flip through it and the Italian backbone is immediately apparent, with Tuscany and Piedmont anchoring the bottle list in a way that feels intentional rather than default. It's not a list that's going to surprise you, but it's one you can work with.
The list leans into the Italian steakhouse brief with genuine conviction — Tuscany and Piedmont do the heavy lifting, with Veneto filling in the middle ground and Napa showing up for the crowd that still needs to see a Cab. An 80-120 bottle range is respectable for a suburban steakhouse, and there's enough spread across price points to avoid feeling trapped. The gaps show up when you look for adventurous picks outside the Italo-American comfort zone — there's no real detour into Sicily, Campania, or anything that would signal a wine director with an agenda. What's here is solid, just not inspired.
Fifteen to twenty-five by-the-glass options is a generous pour program for this zip code, and the $12–$18 range tracks with the room's positioning. The Badia al Colle Chianti makes a welcome appearance on that list — a Tuscan producer that earns its spot without leaning on name recognition alone. Rotation isn't evident from what we found, which suggests the BTG list is more steady-state than dynamic.
Badia al Colle Chianti — $14
Chianti at this price point by the glass is often a trap, but Badia al Colle is a legitimate Tuscan producer — not a supermarket label dressed up in restaurant clothing. It's the move with the Chicken Vesuvio and leaves money on the table for dessert.
Badia al Colle Chianti
In a room full of Napa Cabs and safe Pinot Grigio pours, most tables are sleeping on this one. Chianti doesn't have the ego of a Barolo, but it punches well above its price and handles the kitchen's Italian-American repertoire better than anything else on the BTG list.
Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
The Napa Cab section exists because it has to — this is a steakhouse and the demographic demands it. But the markups on Napa at a restaurant of this profile reliably run 3–4x retail, and you're paying for the badge on the label more than what's in the glass. The Italian reds will treat you better for less.
Badia al Colle Chianti + Chicken Vesuvio
Vesuvio's roasted garlic, white wine pan sauce, and crispy potato situation wants a wine with acid and a little earthiness — not a fruit bomb. Chianti's bright cherry and savory backbone cut right through the richness without competing with the dish.
The Bottom Line
Chicago Prime Italian is a reliable night out for wine in the western suburbs — the Italian selections are well-chosen, the BTG program is generous, and the room is worth the reservation. Just stay away from the Napa Cab unless someone else is paying.
Downtown Naperville · Naperville · American pub / burgers
Jackson Avenue Pub is not a wine destination, but Wine Wednesdays at half-price make it a legitimately smart stop if you're already there for a burger and a game. Come for the beer, stay for the deal.

Hugo's Naperville is a reliable, well-run steakhouse wine program that will not let you down and will not excite you. Come for the prime beef and oysters, order the Jordan or the Duckhorn, and don't look too hard at the markup on the Pinot Grigio.

Fat Rosie's is a genuinely fun taco and tequila spot that has no business being reviewed for its wine — and that's kind of the point. If your table wants wine, order cocktails instead and save everyone the disappointment.

Vasili's isn't trying to be a wine destination, but the Greek-focused list has enough genuine producers and interesting grapes to reward curious drinkers — especially on Tuesdays when the bottles go half-price. Watch the markups on the Agiorgitiko, lean into the northern Greek reds and the Malagousia, and you'll eat and drink very well along that riverwalk.

Lou Malnati's is a legitimately iconic pizza destination — but the wine list is an afterthought, marked up on cheap bottles with zero curation or ambition. Come for the deep dish, drink beer, and save the wine night for somewhere that cares.

Hotel Arista / CityGate Centre · Naperville · Italian
Che Figata is the rare suburban hotel restaurant with a wine list worth actually engaging with — Italian-focused, sommelier-guided, and broad enough to reward exploration. The markups sting on a few bottles, but the range and program depth make this the best wine bet in Naperville's CityGate orbit.

Liberty/Belmont Corridor · Youngstown · Italian Steakhouse
Station Square Ristorante is the wine list Youngstown doesn't know it has — deep Italian selections, prestige California anchors, and 450+ bottles that would turn heads in any city. The markups are real and there's no dynamic specials program to soften them, but if you're willing to invest in a bottle of Barolo or a Super Tuscan, this place delivers.

Johnny's is doing the most with a crowd-pleasing formula — 160 bottles, a Wine Spectator nod, and a list that won't offend anyone. Markups on the trophy bottles are hard to defend, but if you know where to look, there's a solid night of wine here for a reasonable bill.

Ca' Dario Steakhouse is a reliable wine destination for anyone who wants serious Italian bottles with their steak without having to navigate a 300-label monster list. The markups trend steep, especially on the celebrity bottles, but the Santa Barbara Syrah and Sicilian options give value-hunters a legitimate path.
