Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Carmela's fits on a cocktail napkin — and not in the charming, curated way. Seven wines, a house sangria, and a rack of Barefoot splits tell you everything you need to know about the priority level here. This is a red-sauce Italian spot where the lasagna is the point, and wine is an afterthought.
The list pulls from two buckets: mass-market California (Apothic Red, Louis M. Martini Cabernet, Prophecy Sauvignon Blanc) and entry-level Italian (Luccio Chianti, Ecco Domani Merlot, Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio). There's a Lambrusco on there, which at least feels vaguely Italian-appropriate, but the range starts and ends at your local grocery wine aisle. No depth, no regional exploration, no producers that require any thought. If you walked in hoping to drink something interesting with your Chicken Parm, you're going to need to recalibrate expectations fast.
All seven wines plus the house sangria are available by the glass, priced between $5.50 and $8.25 — so at least they're not holding anything hostage in bottle-only territory. The glass pours are priced accessibly enough that you won't feel robbed, but the ceiling is low. There's no rotation, no seasonal swap, just the same seven standing guard.
Luccio Chianti — $27.95/bottle
If you're eating Italian food, drink Italian wine — even if it's modest. Luccio Chianti is the most food-appropriate thing on this list, and at under $28 a bottle it's a reasonable companion to a plate of lasagna without making you feel like you overpaid.
Lambrusco
Most people will scroll past it without a second look, but fizzy, slightly sweet Lambrusco was basically engineered to go with heavy Italian-American food. It cuts through richness, it's fun, and nobody at this kind of restaurant orders it — which means your server might actually remember you.
Apothic Red
Apothic Red retails for around $10 and is engineered in a lab to taste like everyone's first wine phase. At $21.95 a bottle here it's not outrageous, but it's the least interesting way to spend your money on a list that's already not trying very hard.
Luccio Chianti + Chicken Parmesan
Chianti and tomato sauce is one of the oldest relationships in Italian dining for a reason — the acidity in the wine cuts through the richness of the cheese and holds up against the marinara without stepping on anything. It's the closest thing to a correct answer this list offers.
❌ The Bottom Line
Carmela's is a warm, unpretentious neighborhood Italian spot where the food clearly gets the love and the wine list gets whatever's left over. Come for the pasta, order the Chianti or the Lambrusco, and don't walk in expecting to be surprised.
Mishawaka · South Bend · Casual Seafood and Grill
Bonefish Grill Mishawaka isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — and at $6–$9 a glass with recognizable, well-stored bottles, it earns its place as a reliable option when you just want a decent pour with your salmon. Send your friends here knowing the wine won't disappoint, even if it won't surprise anyone either.

Tippecanoe Place is a beautiful room with a wine list that plays it very, very safe — fine for a anniversary dinner where the ambiance is doing most of the work, but don't come here expecting the wine to match the architecture. Order the Jordan, enjoy the mansion, and leave the exploration for another night.

Sunny Italy Cafe is a genuinely beloved South Bend institution — the food has the history and the heart. The wine list, unfortunately, is just along for the ride. Order the pasta, drink the Montepulciano, and don't expect much more than that.

South Bend · South Bend · Casino Dining / American Steakhouse
Four Winds Copper Rock has built a wine list that punches well above what any casino in this zip code needs to — 450 bottles is real, and the anchoring producers are crowd-pleasing for a reason. The markups are casino-predictable and the program lacks the staff depth and rotating energy to reach its potential, but if you're eating steak in South Bend tonight, this is where you want to be drinking.

Barnaby's is a genuinely beloved local pizza spot and nobody goes there for the wine — nor should they. Come for the pizza, grab a beer, and let the wine list quietly do its worst in the corner.

Parisi's wine list isn't going to make anyone's 'must-visit' wine destination list, but it does exactly what a neighborhood Italian joint's wine program should: keeps prices honest, leans into Italian varieties, and stays out of the way of good food. Send a friend here for dinner, not for wine exploration.

Olive Garden's wine list is the dining equivalent of airport Wi-Fi — functional, fine, and not something you'd ever brag about. Order the Chianti, enjoy the breadsticks, and save the serious bottle for somewhere that earned it.

Carrabba's Beaumont isn't where you go when wine is the point — but for a chain Italian dinner, the list is priced fairly and the pours are honest. Send a friend here for the Chicken Bryan, not the wine program, but they won't suffer.
