Wingman Metrics
Walking into a 135-year-old Studebaker mansion sets expectations high — and then the wine list arrives and resets them. It's a tidy, inoffensive list that says 'we want you to have a nice time' more than 'we want you to discover something.' Think of it as the wine equivalent of a well-ironed tablecloth: appropriate, unremarkable.
The list leans hard on California with familiar faces — Jordan, Rombauer, Meiomi — plus a nod to the Pacific Northwest and a few French bottles to keep things looking cosmopolitan. There's nothing here that will challenge you or make you think, but if you know what you like and you like what you know, you won't leave disappointed. The French representation feels thin for a room this formal; Bordeaux and Burgundy deserve more than a token presence. Gaps in Italy, Spain, and anything remotely adventurous suggest a list built for comfort, not curiosity.
Somewhere between 10 and 16 by-the-glass options land in the $12–$18 range, which is workable for a special-occasion spot in South Bend. The pours skew predictable — expect Whispering Angel Rosé and Meiomi Pinot Noir to be doing most of the heavy lifting. Rotation doesn't appear to be a priority here; this looks like a 'set it and forget it' program.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon — $120
At the top of the bottle price range, Jordan is a known commodity — reliably well-made Alexander Valley Cab that actually delivers for the occasion. In a list where much of the markup feels steep, this one at least gives you something worth drinking.
Whispering Angel Rosé
Yes, it's everywhere. But in a room full of red-or-white diners, a Provence rosé against the pan-seared salmon is genuinely the smartest move on the table — and most guests here won't think to order it.
Meiomi Pinot Noir
You can grab this at Kroger for under $15. At restaurant markup in a formal dining room, you're paying mansion prices for a grocery store wine. The occasion deserves better.
Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon + Filet Mignon
Classic for a reason. Jordan's structured tannins and dark fruit hold up to the beef without steamrolling it — exactly what you want when you're dropping money on a filet in a historic mansion.
The Bottom Line
Tippecanoe Place is a beautiful room with a wine list that plays it very, very safe — fine for a anniversary dinner where the ambiance is doing most of the work, but don't come here expecting the wine to match the architecture. Order the Jordan, enjoy the mansion, and leave the exploration for another night.
Mishawaka · South Bend · Casual Seafood and Grill
Bonefish Grill Mishawaka isn't a wine destination, but it's not trying to be — and at $6–$9 a glass with recognizable, well-stored bottles, it earns its place as a reliable option when you just want a decent pour with your salmon. Send your friends here knowing the wine won't disappoint, even if it won't surprise anyone either.

Sunny Italy Cafe is a genuinely beloved South Bend institution — the food has the history and the heart. The wine list, unfortunately, is just along for the ride. Order the pasta, drink the Montepulciano, and don't expect much more than that.

South Bend · South Bend · Casino Dining / American Steakhouse
Four Winds Copper Rock has built a wine list that punches well above what any casino in this zip code needs to — 450 bottles is real, and the anchoring producers are crowd-pleasing for a reason. The markups are casino-predictable and the program lacks the staff depth and rotating energy to reach its potential, but if you're eating steak in South Bend tonight, this is where you want to be drinking.

Barnaby's is a genuinely beloved local pizza spot and nobody goes there for the wine — nor should they. Come for the pizza, grab a beer, and let the wine list quietly do its worst in the corner.

Crooked Ewe is a brewery first and a wine bar never — but for what it is, the wine program shows real effort and real value. If you're dragged here by a beer-loving group and need something in a stem, you'll be fine.

The Wild Sage is your dependable neighborhood spot in Eagle Ranch — the wine list won't blow your mind, but it won't embarrass you at dinner either. Watch the markups on the top-shelf Napa bottles and stick to the mid-range, and you'll be fine.

Warehouse Kitchen + Cork won't win any awards for depth or ambition, but it plays its hand honestly — fair prices, solid local representation, and a full by-the-glass program that respects your wallet. If you're in Traverse City and want a glass of something local with a water view, this works.

Sunnyside is a casual lodge restaurant wearing a serious wine list under its flannel — the markup is steep and it won't win any awards for staff expertise, but the producer lineup is legitimately impressive for where you're sitting. If you're already at the lake, this is absolutely worth ordering a real bottle.
