Wingman Metrics
The wine list at Applebee's San Marcos is exactly what you expect when you walk through those doors — and that's the problem. It reads less like a curated selection and more like someone grabbed whatever was on sale at the nearest HEB. There is no curiosity here, no ambition, just a laminated insert tucked into the back of the menu.
We're looking at 10 to 20 wines, all California, all household names that you could find at any grocery store for half the restaurant price. The roster is anchored by Sutter Home, Barefoot, and Woodbridge — brands built for volume, not character. There are no regions worth noting, no producers worth seeking out, and zero evidence that anyone involved in stocking this list has thought about wine in the last decade. The entire selection is a single note played on repeat.
Six to ten pours available by the glass, priced between $5 and $9, which is genuinely the most defensible thing about this program. What you're paying for, though, is convenience rather than quality — these are commodity wines in casual stemware. Rotation appears nonexistent; what's on the list today was likely on the list two years ago.
Woodbridge Chardonnay — $7
If you're going to drink wine here, this is the least risky move. It's mass-produced and simple, but at this price point it's hard to feel too burned.
Barefoot Moscato
Genuinely sweet and low-alcohol, this is actually a decent call if you're having the boneless wings — the sugar cuts the heat and nobody at this table is judging. Lean into it.
Sutter Home White Zinfandel
There is no universe in which this is the move. It's cloyingly sweet, thin, and a relic of a wine era that should stay buried. Order a beer instead.
Barefoot Moscato + Boneless Wings
The sweetness in the Moscato does real work against the heat of the wing sauce — it's a low-stakes pairing that actually makes sense in this context.
❌ The Bottom Line
We wouldn't send a friend here for wine under any circumstances — this list exists to check a box, not to enhance your meal. Order a cocktail, drink a beer, and save the wine for somewhere that gives a damn.

Come to Taqueria El Mexicano for the tacos — they're the whole point. The wine list is an afterthought, and that's fine, just don't make it the reason you show up.

Mamacita's is a perfectly decent Tex-Mex spot and the margaritas probably earn their own review — but the wine list is an afterthought and should be treated as one. Come for the fajitas and frozen drinks; leave the wine enthusiasm at home.

This is not a wine destination, and it is not trying to be — the list exists because corporate said it should. Drink a sweet tea or a beer and save your wine order for literally anywhere else in San Marcos.

Logan's Roadhouse exists to sell you a steak, and the wine list knows it. If you're here, order whatever's cold and move on — the food is the point.

This is a wine list that exists because restaurants are expected to have one — full stop. If you're eating at Cheddar's and it's before 7:30 PM on a weekday, grab a $4 glass of whatever during happy hour and call it a day; otherwise, order a beer.

The wine list at Olive Garden exists to check a box, not to enhance your meal. Order the Chianti with your lasagna, enjoy the breadsticks, and don't overthink it — this is not a wine destination.

54th Street is a perfectly fine place to eat a burger and drink a cold beer — the wine list is just there because it has to be. If you're set on wine, stick to the Gruet or the Chenin Blanc and let everyone else order the drafts.

CG's is a solid spot to eat a burger before you lose money on the floor — but the wine list is as much of a gamble as the slots, and the house edge is not in your favor. Order a cocktail and move on.

Beau's Grille isn't a destination wine stop, but it's a perfectly competent list for what the room demands — and Thursday's Retail Wine Night is a legitimate reason to plan around it. Send a friend here for steak and wine on a Thursday without hesitation; any other night, manage expectations.
